Freak Show’ tackles cliché with ‘trans-visionary’ grace
BY SOPHIE-MARIE PRIME

Editor’s Note: The arts and entertainment department is adjusting its grading scale from a letter-grade system to a numeric score out of 5. This change is intended to increase accuracy and consistency between reviews.

Director Trudie Styler described “Freak Show” as a “story of resistance” — and that’s right on the mark. Adapted from the James St. James novel of the same name, the film follows queer teen Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther of “The Imitation Game” fame). Lawther’s performance is spell-binding and genuine — Billy is radiant in extravagant costumes and possesses unapologetic confidence to boot. Read More

Bette Midler On Her First Tour:

Bette Midler On Her First Tour: “My first tour was soooo tiring but it was fascinating. Rochester, Toronto, Boston, L.A., and the SouthWest, … the people who came to see me were very far out, and when they all get together in one place they’re amazed that there are so many of them. My audience is fairly educated and they’ll try anything once. (Evening Star, March 11, 1976)

What connects you to Sophie?

What connects you to Sophie? “Sophie is very bright and independent. She does shows for us. My husband and I are the audience. And we have a spotlight in our house – it came with the building. She chooses her music, she does her dance. She decides how she’s going to entertain us. And he’s quite wonderful…. Also, we have inner together every single night. Either my husband cooks or I cook. if we’re going out, we prepare her food and talk about it ahead of time. We always check her homework. And we take her to ballet rehearsals. Selling Artist Names As Keywords: Facebook’s Misappropriation Problem

Facebook seems to have something of legality issue on its hands, with the recent news that several artists, including Prince, Celine Dion, and The Beatles have had their names put up for sale as advertising keywords on the popular social network.

What do Prince, The Beatles, The Chainsmokers, Celine Dione, Maroon 5, Jimi Hendrix and Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. all have in common? Each of their names are for sale as advertising keywords on Facebook. (Although we’ll just look at Facebook today, it’s highly likely that the same is true of Google and other advertising networks that profit from the sale of keywords.) Read More

For reasons known to himself, Damian Counsell conducted a poll on Twitter recently asking people to choose the “most narcissistic, self-congratulatory, humblebraggy, sick-making ballad of modern times”, offering a choice of the first four of this list. Number four won by a landslide, but I thought this selection too limited and offered to expand it to 10.

1. “Greatest Love Of All”, George Benson 1977, Whitney Houston 1985. Read More
