Jenifer Lewis Is the Mother of Black Hollywood—and Has the Stories to Prove It

Jenifer Lewis speaks like someone who was raised on Broadway. Everyone is “darling!” and “honey!” She’s as easily given to singing as she is to speaking. She can regale you for days with stories about her magnificent career and off-screen adventures: doing readings with Oprah Winfrey, having heart-to-hearts with Carrie Fisher, hooking up with theater star Gregory Hines. For the last two and a half years, the actress—currently starring in Black-ish—has been channeling those stories into a scintillating, yet heartfelt memoir. It’s slated for a November 14 release, and it has a perfect title: The Mother of Black Hollywood. Read More

BetteBack February 6, 1975: Critics Get A Preview Of The Cher Special

San Mateo Times

There is no question that when Sonny Bono started his “Sonny Comedy Hour” he missed Cher.

The absence of Cher was one of the real reasons for the show failing to make it through the season.

Not only did Sonny’s show lack writing, it lacked comedy.

Next Wednesday night, Cher will try it on her own. This show, a special designed to kick off her new series, came off much better than did Sonny’s solo venture in television.

It was the presence of Cher that made the old “Sonny and Cher Show” a success. The girl can wear clothes like a high fashion model. Read More

BetteBack September 21, 1974: How Come We Don’t Hear More About Bette Midler Lately?

San Mateo Times

I just love Bette Midler. How come we don’t read more about her lately?-K. O., Alexandria, Va.

Miss Midler, one of this country’s fastest rising and most talented singers, won’t cooperate with the press, who are anxious to include her in stories and articles. She says that unless the story is about.her, and her alone, she doesn t want to be in it, because she doesn’t like the idea of being lumped together with similar celebrities. Last year she won “After Dark” magazine’s Entertainer of the Year award, and this year she won a Grammy Award for the Best New Artist. Incidentally, another star who thinks the same way is Barbra Streisand. Read More

Bette Midler:

Bette Midler: “She (the ‘Divine Miss M’) never went anywhere. She’s just a character. That’s the only character that I ever made up by myself … I was in New York, I saw these people, I looked at these movies, I said, ‘This is what I want to be.’ And that’s what I became … But then I didn’t want to get stuck in it, like … John Belushi … I didn’t want the character to run my life. I wanted to be able to go somewhere quiet, be by myself and have a life … I never exactly put it in those words, but I really wanted to be who I always was. I mean, I didn’t think that anybody would buy what I had to say whan I was just myself, because really I’m kind of a bore. But that character, there was nothing boring about her. She was lively, she had red hair, she wore dresses cut down to there, everybody loves that. Who wouldn’t want to be that? But that wasn’t what I was … Not for a second. But I put it out and people were charmed by it.” — (Midler to Movieline, c. December 1991.) Read More

Bette Midler On Hollywood’s Emphasis On Youth And Beauty:

Bette Midler On Hollywood’s Emphasis On Youth And Beauty: “The movies are guilty of this as well. That’s why I don’t go to many films anymore. I don’t like what the industry is selling. For the most part the Hollywood studio products have as much nutrition as cotton candy. They’re like a McDonald’s burger.” (Daily Record, Sept.25, 1996)

Bette Midler On Being A Role Model:

Bette Midler On Being A Role Model: You know, a lot of people tell me I was their role model when they were in college, and that makes me feel fabulous. Maybe it’s because of my straight talk and that, despite what has happened, I lived through it. Sure, things have been rough, and I wouldn’t want to live through them again. Al t h o u g h, I’ll tell you, you’re up, you’re down, you’re up, you’re down, and then it’s over with. Ultimately, I have no regrets, because it has all turned out for the best. I like exactly where I am. (Syracuse Herald, February 5, 1989) Read More

Bette Midler On Martin:

Bette Midler On Martin: “He was exactly what I was looking for,” said Bette. “I had nobody to tell my troubles to. And I wanted to settle down. I wanted to have a family. I was really ready for that. Not that I h a v e n ‘t had to work at it,” she explained, sitting up straight. Marriage involves big compromises all the time. International-level compromises.” (Syracuse Herald, February 5, 1989)

Bette Midler On Her Mother And Family:

Bette Midler On Her Mother And Family: “I think I made her happy. I think we all did, I’m sorry. I get very emotional about these family issues I don’t know why I think it’s very primal how they treat you. Some people go to therapy and work it out, but I never got around to it . . . At the end. .. when my mother died . .. it was very bad.”? (Syracuse Herald, February 5, 1989)

Bette Midler. At KeyArena, Seattle, last night. ——————————-

“I hear you’re in the market for a new police chief,” declared Bette Midler at KeyArena last night. “Well, look no further: I’m your gal.”

Sorry, Bette – you’re a lot better at gleefully disturbing the peace than you would be enforcing it. Read More
