Do Gay Men Love, Dislike or Feel Indifferent About Taylor Swift?
Instinct Staff | November 12, 2017

Gay men have had their share of female icons in their lives over the course of the past fifty years. Names that come to mind include Barbra Streisand, Cher, Madonna, Bette Midler and more. For my generation, the debate for many years was who did we like more: Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera?

Bette Midler on Susan Boyle

[Bette Midler on Susan Boyle] She is an act whose time has come. People love that voice. She sings straight. She doesn’t do a lot of riffing. There are no trills, no thrills. Its straight singing and it comes from the heart.

BetteBack September 1998 – Bathhouse Betty Review (Wikipedia)

Wikipedia
September 1998

51m-Akn2rcL._SS500_

The title of the album, Bathhouse Betty, refers to Midler‘s early career when she performed her cabaret shows at gay bathhouses like the Continental Baths in New York which led to her becoming a gay icon with a loyal LGBT following ever since. When Midler promoted the album she said in an interview “Despite the way things turned out [with the AIDS crisis], I’m still proud of those days [when I got my start singing at the gay bathhouses]. I feel like I was at the forefront of the gay liberation movement, and I hope I did my part to help it move forward. So, I kind of wear the label of ‘Bathhouse Betty’ with pride.”[1] Read More

BetteBack December 13, 1973: Gross me out, Miss M

The Village Voice
December 13, 1973

2016-08-15_3-20-42

La creme de la creme and la pits de la pits showed up for the Divine One’s opening at the Palace. Dyan Cannon in platinum. Vito Russo in Skunk. Ruth Truth in red lame. Channel No. 13 in popper-drenched spacesuit.

They came by Rolls, foot, BMT, and rickshaw. In singles (Edward Sherman) in couples (Earl Wilson with Dong Kingman), and in packs (the After Dark staff). Some had seen her at the Continental, some had come for a new taste treat. They crossed a picket line (the United Scenic Artists Local 829), squited at kleigs, highbrowed onlookers, divined friends in the lobby, cluttered the balcony, and practically angina pectorised in anticipation of HER. BetteBack November 27, 1991: Bette Midler upset at lack of leadership from Washington on AIDS problem

Winnipeg Free Press

Actress Bette Midler has her feelings about political leadership, particularly when it comes to the battle against AIDS.

“No matter what anyone is doing now, it’s not enough,” says Midler. “I have to admit at the moment I’m very disheartened at the lack of leadership. And I really do blame the White House. As the saying goes, the fish stinks from the head. Who do they care about? Maybe a couple of people in Europe, but certainly not Americans. If Watts went up in flames tomorrow, and everyone died, I don’t think they’d care. Such an incredible lack of humanity and compassion. It’s appalling.” Read More
