This article originally appeared in the June 1995 issue of OUT.

It’s the sort of daydream around which Jill Sobule might fashion one of her whimsical songs: she was hanging around her house in Los Angeles, in her pajamas, when a talent scout who had acquired her demo tape purely by accident called to invite her to perform at the Atlantic Records office the next day. Two days later, he called again—from an airplane— to tell Sobule she was as good as signed. All this as a result of “demos that my previous manager, who dropped me, said were ‘Terrible! You’re never gonna get anywhere!’” Read More

BetteBack March 3, 1975: Friends Commission Neon Portrait Of Midler

Ames Daily Tribune
March 3, 1975

bette-korvettesposter

NEW YORK (UPI) — Rudi Stern says neon has been getting a raw deal all these years. Behind all those beer signs lurk an art form.

Neon has been the captive of one industry, namely signage, said Stern at his lower Manhattan studio.  There s no reason for it to be captive to signage.

At his shop, called  Let There Be Neon, he is breaking the barriers that once relegated neon to tavern windows and rundown neighborhoods.

An offshoot is a workshop for those who want to decorate their apartments with neon sculpture. Read More

BetteBack November 19, 1974: Bette Midler Set To Return To Broadway

Gastonia Gazette
November 19, 1974

LAT_LIBRARY083108E_35461a_8col

BETTE MIDLER, a.k.a. the Divine Miss M, whose career began on Broadway as a chorus girl in “Fiddler on the Roof,” will be back on the boards, this time as the star of her own production. “The Bette Midler Revue” is exactly what it sounds like — hoofing, chirping, clowning and presenting some unspecified “new characterizations,” with the stage to herself. No date or theater has been named.

Bette Midler On The Divine Miss M:

Bette Midler On The Divine Miss M: “I’m just not so busy promoting myself anymore. What I was doing then was entrenching that character in the public. Now that character is there and she doesn’t need spoken about anymore.” (Evening Star, March 11, 1976)

Tucson Daily Citizen

Q: What’s this about Bette Midler making her film debut as the Virgin Mary?

A: lt’s a three-year old, jazzed-up home-movie spoof titled “The Divine Mr. J” that emerged from the can only when the Divine Miss M emerged from obscurity. “We turned down a Mike Nichols film, for Heaven’s sake,” says her manager. “Now this piece of (vulgarity deleted) comes out.”

BetteBack April 1974: Bette Midler by Bette Midler

Bette Midler: Bette Midler (Atlantic)
April 1974

41uIWA1z-CL._SS500_

ALL THIS diverse material – old Broadway show tunes, a Phil Spector classic, a Wardell Gray jazz novelty, soul songs, Dylan – you can almost hear those presenting Bette murmuring, “See how versatile she is?”

The singer herself doesn’t project that sort of pretension, but her unfortunate misunderstanding of the material, her inability or unwillingness to distinguish between the real and the artificial, the astigmatism that has her seeing camp as humor and pathos as tragedy are all as insidious as the adulation of her adoring audience. Yes, she does lots of different types of songs. But she does nearly all of them wrong. Read More

New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom wasn’t big enough for dueling divas Bette Midler and Cher on Friday night.

The Divine Miss M dissed a tardy, lip synching Cher as “someone who used to be famous, ” according to witnesses at the Miracle On 34th Street concert.

The latest flare up between the two superstars was sparked by Cher, who, due to sing first, appeared a half hour late. Apparently she had been getting her face retooled by make up artist Kevin Acoin, but Midler’s camp suspected her dramatic entrance was deliberate. Read More

For Bette Midler fans, don’t get too excited when you see the hype for a new movie, “The Divine Mr. J.”

The publicity people would have us believe it’s a new movie starring the Divine Miss M as the Virgin Mary in a religious Satire. Truth of the matter is the film was made three years ago in Detroit and Bette’s part is a bit .,. .
