The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) returns for its annual New York Fall Gala on November 7 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine with host Neil Patrick Harris.

The gala — which celebrates the foundation’s 25th anniversary this year — will pay tribute to founder Elton John and his contributions to his foundation and beyond. “Elton’s philanthropic endeavors and activism for human rights and the arts have inspired millions and made a positive difference in people’s lives around the world,” said EJAF Chairman David Furnish in a press release about the event. “But without a doubt, Elton’s greatest contribution as a humanitarian is his 25-year commitment to building one of the most important institutions in the effort to end AIDS – the Elton John AIDS Foundation.” Read More

Stunner Sophie Von Haselberg allowed me to explore her rather extensive cosmetic collection. I was fascinated. Not only does Sophie bare a striking resemblance to her mom, Bette Midler, but she is also vivacious, talented and funny. Check all the beauty and blue scoop here, including her recipe for a DIY body scrub and the meaning of “hot lids”!

Q. What’s your favorite movie or song with “blue” in the title? Read More

BetteBack August 17, 1974: Fashion In 1974

Lawrence Journal World
August 17, 1974

Fashion in 1974 is not dictated by authorities or names or peers, but by needs, living patterns, individually and personal preference, New York fashion coordinator Virginia Sorem said recently in Kansas City.

Nowhere is this fashion definition better expressed than on the college campus.

Ms. Sorem, who selects all the women’s clothing for the J.C. Penney catalogue each season, said in 1974” there are no trends, there are concepts.”

THE CONCEPT of easy living reigns supreme on the Kansas University campus. Despite the fashion prognostication of an end to the blue jean uniform of years past, it will continue. Read More

BetteBack December 23, 1973: Bette Midler makes for good all around listening

Hattiesburg American
December 23, 1973

Bette Midler‘s flexible and interestingly toned voice would alone have been sufficient to propel her to popularity, but the “divine Miss M” reaches the masses with another device — the use of tasteful music that has an appeal to all, regardless of which side the generation gap you may falL Her music is not new or in any way innovative.

Rather, it seeks to entertain with its own unique character, a slightly tongue-in-cheek aura of nostalgia for the glamour of the female singing stars of the 40’s and the 50’s. Read More

BetteBack December 14, 1973: Bette Midler’s Second Album As Good As The First

Daily Review

BETTE MIDLER – By Rette Midler on Atlantic.

Bette’s first album was a once-in-a-lifetime shot where she brought back some oldies as only she could. Her recent effort is just as good, with a little more background than before, which is just what the Divine Miss M needed to keep her !940s style up.

The album was produced excellently by Arif Mardin and Barry Manilow. Some of the tunes on the record are “Skylark,” “Drinking Again.” “In The Mood” and “Uptown—Da Doo Run Run. Read More

BetteBack October 9, 1973: Midler is one of the most powerful singers around

Houston Daily Cougar
October 9, 1973

“ All the freaks in one place, Bette Midler nodded approvingly at the crowd gathered for her concert Sunday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.

Every Looney Tune in Houston must be here. With no opening act threatening to steal her thunder on the stage, Midler still had to contend with the scene-stealing of the very audience that assembled to pay her homage. The daintily embroidered blue jean jackets, the rhinestones, the glitter and the bare midriff dresses (on men) all stood ready to challenge the Star lierself for attention. The more flamboyant and outrageous members of the audience received a warm round of applause as they made their way to their seats before the lights went down for the Divine Miss M, as she prefers to be called. Bette Midler On Finding Her Musical Identity Through Ballads:

Bette Midler On Finding Her Musical Identity Through Ballads: “Well, it was a big shock. But it was also a great relief, in a way, because you look for a musical identity, and it was hard for me to find one that sustained. I mean, they always thought of me as a retro, Andrews Sister-type of personality, someone who could swing almost like a swing singer. Not a valid swing singer, like Ella Fitzgerald, but someone who was just an impersonator. It was thrilling, actually, to find that there was something I could do that people related to, and that was also considered musical. I like the idea of being able to move people. Sometimes I’m surprised at how big the ballads are.” (Chicago Sun Times, 1994) Read More

BetteBack December 23, 1973: Bette Midler, Elton John Top Sellers At Christmas Time In NY

Albuquerque Journal
December 23, 1973

A QUICK survey of the three record shops in the university area revealed that sales had gone up since Thanksgiving, with new albums by Elton John, the Pointer Sisters and Bette Midler being the fastest sellers. Both Bette Midler and the Pointer Sisters have recently performed at UNM’s Pope joy Hall, which Miss Grimes said was ‘‘probably the reason for their popularity”

A customer in the store, Kevin Heney, a UNM senior from Scarsdale, N.Y., said “I usually don’t buy records very often, but I’ve got three brothers and a sister who all like music. Read More
