By: Nizar Ahmed Fri, Dec. 1, 2017

CAIRO – 1 December 2017: December 1 is the birthday of the enchanting singer and actress Bette Midler, whose Grammy-award winning music has sold nearly 30 million copies worldwide, while her film roles have earned her Oscar nominations.

Born in Hawaii on 1945, Midler grew up poor alongside three other siblings, and found joy in the nature around her. Midler studied drama at the University of Hawaii, and got her very first start in movies as an extra on 1965’s “Hawaii”. Soon after, she moved to New York City to get her start in show business, with her earliest stints being a singer at a nightclub. She also had a role on Broadway’s popular “Fiddler on the Roof”. I love Barbara Hershey and Lainie Kazan. I had no idea “Beaches” was an ‘uberweepie’! The nerve!

I love Barbara Hershey and Lainie Kazan. I had no idea “Beaches” was an ‘uberweepie’! The nerve! It wasn’t so bad. I co-produced it. It was a pretty damned good screenplay. I thought it was just another movie. I didn’t think of it as a women’s picture. I was so excited to be able to sing again and have a soundtrack.

BetteBack November 30, 1974: What’s Bette Midler Like?

Dunkirk Evening Observer
November 30, 1974

DHT_Midler

WILL THE REAL BETTE MIDLER . . .? What’s she like, the Divine Miss M? Well, she is a nice girl who tends to be almost square in spite of her avant-garde cult of fans. Bette usually falls in love too easily but with really nice guys. Her current one is a backstage union member she met during her Broadway concert. Bette is driving everybody crazy lately with her, “I don’t want to work” decision and the rumor’s around that she fought with Paul Simon during their record session together (not yet released). But Bette will be okay. She’s a terrific girl. Read More

BetteBack August 26, 1974: Bette Midler Gets Pirated

HOLLYWOOD (UPI> – Hold it! That EJvis Presley tape cartridge you’re playing on your stereo outfit may well be bootlegged.

If you paid only $2.50-*3.50 for that Presley- or Bette Midler 8-track tape then it almost certainly is a pirated product.

The United States Attorney’s Office says one out of every three tape cartridges is as hot as the Watergate recordings although considerably less earth-shaking.

Diet Brown, an assistant U.S. attorney in Los Angeles, recently won conviction against a man named Richard Taxe in a multimillion dollar tape bootlegging operation trial. Read More

BetteBack July 14, 1974: Bette Midler Instrumental In J.J. Walker’s Career

Bakersfield Californian
July 14, 1974

dynomite

Jimmie Walker is making up for lost time and he’s unstoppable.

Watching him perform as “J.J.” on Good Times or doing his standup comedy routines in night clubs or television variety shows it’s hard to believe that a mere five years ago he was just another tall, skinny, frustrated college kid, bowling over his fellow students with his
comedy stuff but longing for the big applause and the big money that comes with professional recognition. But it’s not hard to believe for Jimmie Walker. He can’t move fast enough to make up for all those “lost” years when he was out of show business. Now there’s not enough days, weeks or months for him to play all the clubs, meet all the people, and establish himself as the top standup comic in the country. Read More

Bette Midler:

Bette Midler: “I went on Johnny Carson. He asked me what I was doing, and I said, I work in a bathhouse. I sing in a bathhouse. And I think people were stunned, and I think gay people were — they sat up and said, Oh, my God.”— (Midler talking about working in a gay bathhouse early in her career to Larry King CNN November 26, 2003)
