TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991 (Bette Makes The List Twice)

TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991
By Sam Coffey – Apr 4, 20180

ACCA 1991As voting continues in ACCA 1991, Awards Circuit celebrates the many great films of 1991, perhaps one of the most historic years in Oscar history.  A number of talented performers, directors, writers, and craftsmen were nominated (or won!) for their great achievements but have somehow not found their way back to the Dolby Theatre.  Mercifully, some actors who remained on this barren list for ages eventually found Oscar glory again, with Robert De Niro landing his first nomination since “Cape Fear” with “Silver Linings Playbook” and Laura Dern doing the same in 2014 with “Wild” following up her first nomination for “Rambling Rose.”  Unfortunately, too many winners and nominees from 1991 have passed away, failing to get back to Oscar since this year, including Jessica TandyJack Palance, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and shockingly Jonathan Demme. BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP)—Bette Midler, who entertained the troops in “For the Boys,” and Robin Williams, the homeless savant in “The Fisher King,” won Golden Globes on Saturday night, kicking off Hollywood’s award season.

A tearful Miss Midler, who won for best actress in a motion picture musical or comedy, spoke of her film’s disappointing performance at the box office as she accepted the trophy at the 49th Golden Globes. Read More

BetteBack January 4, 1992: Liz Smith Picks The Women Of The Year 1991

Indiana Gazette

“THERE’S A great woman behind every idiot,” said John Lennon.

For the past several years, I’ve devoted the first column of the New Year to female stars who have dominated the media, and this column in particular, by virtue of controversy, success or scandal – or all three combined.

Annette Bentng – The superwoman of the year! She is the one who finally “caught” Warren Beatty. (They are not married as of this writing, but she is about to bear his child, which is more than hundreds of her predecessors can claim.) When the news broke
that Bening – a beautiful, intelligent woman and a fascinating actress — was carrying Beatty’s baby and that she and Warren were awaiting the stork together, en fajnille, the re-action was like nothing ever seen in Hollywood. Jaded Tinseltowners were literally
mute with shock. And how nice that Mama and Papa are currently appearing in one of the best movies of the year, “Bugsy” — sure to be up for multiple Oscars. Read More

BetteBack April 11, 1982: Bette Midler Is Oscar Gold

Galveston Daily News
April 11, 1982

Those of us who live for the movies are rarely caught off-guard on Oscar night, but when the final announcement was made on March 29,1 doubt that many people were collecting bets.

A foreign film being voted Best Picture of the Year was surprise enough. And no one was probably more
surprised than Chariots of Fire producer David Puttnam. Unless, perhaps, it was Warren Beatty.

Just as everyone was SURE Henry Fonda would be given his overdue honor as Best Actor, everyone was sure that Beatty’s” oneman-wonder Reds would be honored as Best Picture… a suspicion which became embarrassingly obvious as the words Chariots of Fire fell on a gasping crowd. Read More

“Casting By” Premieres Monday Night On HBO

Marion Dougherty, who helped give a start to James Dean, Warren Beatty and more, is a subject of ‘Casting By,’ featuring the likes of Bette Midler and Al Pacino.

Marion Dougherty came to New York from Pennsylvania in 1944 with dreams of becoming a theater set designer. While waiting for her big break, she worked for $45 a week designing windows at Bergdorf Goodman. But Dougherty’s break came in a different form a few years later when a friend working at the NBC live anthology series “Kraft Television Theater” asked her to become a casting assistant on the show. Growing Wiser With Diane Keaton

The Scottish Sun
Diane Keaton: Don’t get obsessed with men like Woody Allen
March 4, 2013

BetteMiddler

HOLLYWOOD star Diane Keaton was Woody Allen’s girlfriend and co-star in the 1970s – which is when she scooped a best actress Oscar for her role in his movie, Annie Hall.

Diane, 67, never married, despite having lovers including Al Pacino and Warren Beatty.

She has two adopted children – daughter Dexter, 17, and son Duke, aged 12.

Her latest comedy, The Big Wedding, is tipped to be a summer blockbuster.

She told GARTH PEARCE what she wishes she’d known at 18.

“AT 18, I spent too long worrying and obsessing over men.

I think it might have been a problem of my generation, growing up in the 1950s. Read More

The 25 Best Actresses Who Never Won An Oscar

The 25 Best Actresses Who Never Won An Oscar
BY TARA AQUINO | FEB 22, 2013

This is how we imagine the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science voters: a circle jerk of crusty board members, suited studio heads, and random Hollywood cogs who haven’t watched a single nominated movie all in a room arbitrarily putting ballots into a hat. Considering some of the questionable winners in Oscar history, we’re fairly certain this is accurate.

One major point of contention: Best (Leading or Supporting) Actress in a Motion Picture. You’d be surprised to see how many phenomenal actresses have yet to take home a trophy, if not already lost the chance of ever putting one on the mantle. Read More
