When Martin” Starger, president of ABC Entertainment, announced his network had signed one of show biz’s current sensations, Bette Midler, to a video special next season, more than a few writers responded: ^Bette Who?” Ms. Midler’s approach to music has been described as a mixture of the Andrews Sisters and Charlie Chaplin. The winds seem to have changed as Bette Midler finally sheds lights on her often snarky stance on Twitter. She gave props to Kim Kardashian over her statements on the Armenian genocide and dispelled rumors that she had permanent vitriol against the model and reality star. According to the 70-year-old singer, she thinks that people are reading into her tweets too seriously. Read More

Bette Midler On Being Labeled Outrageous:

Bette Midler On Being Labeled Outrageous: “Yes, it can become a kind of straitjacket. I think that’s what’s happened to a lot of people in the last 10 or 15 years. Once the floodgates came down and you could say anything, it just seemed like people would say anything and then it wasn’t very entertaining. And that’s not good. I’m sorry it happened, because in the old days you could seek out performers like that, but now, with everything being so up front, it seems like there’s a variety of people all singing the same song. You don’t have to seek them out. They’re all over the TV.” (1993) Read More

I think I’ve been really lucky because my gay crowd had followed me to the limit and the fact that they are so vocal and so full of joy each time they see me, I think that’s a very infectious energy in the audience at my shows.

“I think I’ve been really lucky because my gay crowd had followed me to the limit and the fact that they are so vocal and so full of joy each time they see me, I think that’s a very infectious energy in the audience at my shows. I think they’re the ones who brought the straight people around and it’s because of them that people get me to such a wonderful degree now.”

“Does that mean I play a drag queen?”

Midler played high camp, and in a widely quoted negative review, Arthur Bell of the Village Voice said she resembled “a woman impersonating a man impersonating a woman.”

“Does that mean I play a drag queen?” Midler asked the Toronto press conference audience. “People still ask me if I’m a fairy. I mean, I’m not gay or bisexual or lesbian or any of that stuff, but I have a good ear for speech patterns. When I was working at the baths I could go there and feel right at home. I picked up the gay sense of humor, almost like a sponge. Since I moved out into the world a whole lot more, my personality has changed and even the sound of my voice has changed.” ( Bette Midler, 1980) Read More
