Midler’s latest album lacks old excitement

Some performers, once they find a formula that works, stick with it through successive albums. That’s what Emmylou Harris has done (we’ll discuss her latest. Elite Hotel, a little later), and that’s what Tom Jones (Memories Don’t Leave Like People Do) and Black Oak Arkansas (Lite Mutha) have done.

Not so, however. Bette Midler. The only thing standard about her latest album Songs for the New Depression (Atlantic SD18155). is the way the singer will attack any material, old or new. On this set/songs range from ‘Ol Cape Cod to Strangers in the Night with a duet with Bob Dylan on his Buckets of Rain thrown in. Read More

Tonight: Songwriters Hall of Fame Honors Bette Midler

14 Jun 2012 Grammy Award winner Bette Midler receives the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award at the 43rd Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony June 14 at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Manhattan.

The annual honor is presented to “industry veterans who are acknowledged as pioneers in their craft, whose body of work over time has been substantial, enduring and influential, and whose success and contributions over a lifetime have inspired the music community.”

In addition to Midler’s honor, Fantasticksand 110 in the Shade writers Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones are being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame alongside Jim Steinman (Whistle Down the Wind), Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Seger and Don Schlitz. Read More

LOS ANGELES – Even Bette Midler, the Divine Miss M, was captivated by the viral video featuring Cebu prison inmates dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.”

Bette, asked in a recent interview at the InterContinental Hotel how she thinks the Internet has changed the entertainment industry, answered: “YouTube is an extraordinary resource. You can see the best and worst amateurs. You can see creative people, who normally don’t have a shot, suddenly get a shot. You can also see the finest professionals in any of the entertainment arenas. You can see 2,000 prisoners doing ‘Thriller.’ It’s a library of information.” Read More
