Pretty Woman is his best-known film, but Garry Marshall’s Beaches reinvented the weepy for modern times. It will make you sob every time you see it.

A few years back, the 92nd Street Y in New York had the ingenious idea of having a Beaches “cry-along.”

The idea was, as the title suggests, that the 92Y Downtown would screen Garry Marshall’s 1988 movie for its most dedicated fans, who know that Beaches is not just a weepie, but in fact—even if you have a heart of stone—a film that leaves any human catatonically blubbing. On her first tour since 1994, Bette Midler is still keeping it LARGER than life. The “Divine Intervention” tour, which began May 8 at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood and finishes up July 19 at the O2 Arena in London, UK, brings 14 musicians onstage, including a dancing five-man horn section, as well as her longtime backing trio, The Staggering Harlettes, and plenty of costume and set changes, one of which involves a lip-shaped couch on casters. This is Midler’s first global tour in over a decade and is promoting her October 2014 album, It’s the Girls! What it also brings is sound as real as Bette herself. Read More

There was a surprisingly low gay to gray ratio at the “Bette Midler: Divine Intervention” concert, her first major tour in a decade, but the original diva gave a master class in sass and brass, showing her undiminished prowess in interpretation, patter and soul.

Opening with a projection of the Sistine Chapel’s “The Creation of Adam” (which became “The Creation by Bette,” natch), the Divine Miss M took the United Center stage in a short salmon shift, showing off her still-gorgeous-at-age-69 gams (“don’t I look fabulous? A triumph of science and fiction” and “I’m like vodka — ageless, odorless and tasteless”), backed by a large, on-point band and her trio of Trampettes (“they used be to fact checkers at Fox News — nobody’s noticed they’re gone.”) Read More
