The Tony Awards on Sunday will celebrate the Great White Way.

Winners for the 67th annual Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on May 8. The presentation of the prizes will be made at a gala reception at Sardi’s on May 25. While the Outer Critics Circle can be a precursor for the upcoming Tonys, this year there are significant differences between the two awards. Two of the Tony frontrunners for Best Musical — “Dear Evan Hansen” and “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” — contended in previous seasons at the OCCs for their Off-Broadway runs. Tony predictions were easy last year: One word – “Hamilton” – and you’re done. The race for the 2016-17 Tony Awards is far less cut-and-dried, with plenty of strong contenders but no clear, sweeping favorite. With the Tony nominations announced Tuesday, we’re making a forecast based on conversations with industry veterans, early awards-season attention and gut instinct. Here are seven big predictions for how the noms will shake out in this uncertain season. Read More

On a stage, Midler is all the rainbow you ever need.

Bette Midler and ‘Hello, Dolly!’ are a perfect match. Don’t tell me you’re surprised.

The Divine Miss M as Dolly in “Hello, Dolly!” (Julieta Cervantes)

NEW YORK — The only time I ever saw Ethel Merman on a stage was when she played Dolly Gallagher Levi. In memory, 15-year-old me is seated in the front row — was it really the front row?!? — of the St. James Theatre, at the very end of the 6 1/2-year Broadway run of “Hello, Dolly!” Was I too young to appreciate fully the momentousness of the occasion? Yes, for sure! Read More

‘Hello, Dolly!’: Theater Review – I can’t recall the last time I felt a crowd so frothed up with excitement at a Broadway show

Bette Midler returns to Broadway in her first musical role in 50 years, headlining opposite David Hyde Pierce in a sumptuous revival of the classic Jerry Herman musical.

You feel a distinct sense of occasion stepping into the Shubert Theatre these days, evident in the buzzing sound of the audience before the plush red velvet curtain rises, and then turned up a few notches in the effusive round of applause as the orchestra strikes up the first notes of the title song in the brassy overture to Hello, Dolly! But that’s nothing compared to the show-stopping outpouring of ecstasy that greets the inimitable star, Bette Midler, when she makes her sly surprise entrance on a trolley car. Read More

BetteBack September 6, 1993: Divine Revelation: Midler Back in Fine Form

Chicago Sun-Times
POP: Divine Revelation: Midler Back in Fine Form
September 6, 1993 | Hedy Weiss

`So, Chicago, here I am, up Poplar Creek without a paddle, so to speak, which makes me not unlike your Dan Rostenkowski.”

It was just one of Bette Midler‘s better lines at the Poplar Creek Music Theatre, where she played to packed houses Friday and Saturday.

Midler made her entrance perched on a gilded sunbeam. And three hours later, after a marathon explosion of unbridled energy, trashy excess and gut-wrenching singing, the entertainer vanished along with her spotlight – a tiny figure in an iridescent sea green gown, who had made the transformation from raucous mermaid to galvanic chanteuse. In the interim, she proved once again that she is a singularly profligate star, intent on giving her fans everything but the kitchen sink, and blithely opting for flash while her unquestionable artistry is often forced to wait in the wings.
