The original 1988 Bette Midler/Barbara Hershey  film is one of the most beloved weepies of all time. So this remake comes with high expectations – that it sadly doesn’t meet.

CC (Idina Menzel) and Hillary (Nia Long) are lifelong friends who support each other through respective ups (careers) and downs (illness).

The update (set in SoCal instead of New Jersey) maintains the same beats as the original, but unfortunately Menzel doesn’t have the same comedic chops as Midler, and the film can feel a little flat. Read More

On First Wive’s Club: Yes. Yes. I will admit it. It was a big hit. I’ve had the depths and then I’ve had ‘First Wive’s Club. I knew it was a natural. There are a lot of angry women around and they were rooting for us. I’ve been saying for years, “What are we girls, but the waitresses for the banquet of life?’

There are a lot of angry women around and they were rooting for us. I’ve been saying for years, “What are we girls, but the waitresses for the banquet of life?’ I knew this picture couldn’t flop. And the three girls got along really well. Diane is so low-key. I mean she hasn’t even SEEN movies that she was in. I’d look at the videos, and I’d say, ‘It’s OK girls. But let’s do it again.’” (Herald-Journal – Apr 8, 1997) Read More

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bette Midler and Taj Mahal wowed the crowd with song, and actors from Kathleen Turner to Jason Robards lent their soothing speaking voices.

But it was President Clinton who delivered the most welcome words of all Friday night at a White House reception and performance for National Public Radio.

“ What call I tell you? I’m just an NPR kinda president,” the tuxedoed Clinton confessed to wild applause. “ It’s a good deal.” Read More

I am totally addicted to my work…

I am totally addicted to my work. I love it very much and I am always working. When I stop thinking it is like I am dead. My brain has to be in a constant state of arousal, that’s when I feel the best. (Veronica: March 29, 1980)

BetteBack March 15, 1995: Stars Lobby For The NEA

The Washington Post
March 15, 1995 | Jacqueline Trescott

The powerhouses of country music and politics spent a few minutes yesterday shooting the breeze on a sunny Capitol balcony.

House Speaker Newt Gingrich candidly admitted he doesn’t have any recordings by megastar Garth Brooks nor had he even been to one of Brooks’s concerts. But he described his wife as a devoted fan and he certainly recognized Brooks’s star power.

Brooks looked the part of a country icon; his beige ten-gallon hat tilted just so, he was dressed in blue Wranglers, an open-collar blue- striped shirt and speckled ostrich boots. He later said that he didn’t know what to expect, smiling gamely. The point was that he was getting 10 minutes out of the speaker’s crammed schedule to ask the politician who had called for privatization of the National Endowment for the Arts to continue its government funding. The Divine Miss M
September 24, 2012

It seems music stars and Boeing go hand in hand these days. Just a few weeks after Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson paid a visit to the 747-8 simulator near our Renton factory, Bette Midler took a tour of Boeing South Carolina last Thursday.

Bette Midler poses with 2nd shift flight line teammates at Boeing South Carolina.

The entertainer’s tour included aft fabrication and assembly, midbody assembly and integration, final assembly and our delivery center. All along the way, Boeing South Carolina employees got the chance to say hello to the Divine Miss M and welcome her to North Charleston. I’m told she was very impressed with the site’s focus on environmental responsibility, as well as the environmental benefits of the 787 Dreamliner. Read More
