Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

Broadway B.O. Leaps Even As ‘Lion King’ & ‘Wicked’ Feel Winter Chill

With the three-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend as a spur, the Broadway box office defied the January trend, pole-vaulting 27% over the same week in 2017 and even surpassing the previous week by 2%. All that despite some staggering nose-dives among the family-friendly crowd.

That includes Disney’s two shows: The Lion King was off $681K from the previous week at the Nederlander Organization’s Minskoff Theatre, while Aladdin, installed at the Mouse’s New Amsterdam flagship, skidded nearly a quarter-million dollars. It wasn’t a great week for Andrew Lloyd Webber, either: The Phantom of the Opera, tagging the 30-year mark at the Shubert Organization’s Majestic Theatre, fell a chandelier-swinging $371K, while School of Rock, at the Shuberts’ Winter Garden, was off $193K. Wicked, at the Nederlanders’ Gershwin, was off $280K from the week before. Read More

Sellers’ Market Boosts Broadway B.O. To $50M All-Time Peak Week High
by Jeremy Gerard
January 2, 2018 2:45pm

Broadway offered something for everyone last week, as long as everyone was loaded with dough. Face-value ducats topped out at $1,150 for blockbuster Hamilton, but that was Monopoly money considering the going rate for fans of Bette Midler (nearing the spectacular end of her spectacular run in Hello, Dolly!) and Bruce Springsteen (whose work week is limited to five performances at the 948-seat Walter Kerr). Bette Midler Hangs Up The Phone On ‘Eat You Last”
July 2, 2013

Bette Midler wrapped up her Broadway run on Sunday in “I’ll Eat You Last,” her hit play about the Hollywood agent Sue Mengers, and by Monday she was starting to decompress. Her voice was strained after three months of chain-smoking herbal cigarettes as the nicotine-and-pot-loving Mengers, but otherwise she seemed hardy during a telephone interview about her first role on Broadway in some 40 years. There was little bitterness, for instance, at the two-dozen theater insiders who declined to nominate her for a Tony Award for best actress for “I’ll Eat You Last” – a decision that was one of the biggest surprises of the theater season. “Red” By Bette Midler

I read that it’s all black and white.
Oooh, the spectrum made a shade I like!
Ooh, those crinsom rays of ruby bright.
Ah! The technicolor li-i-ight!

Red! Red! I want red!
There’s no substitute for red!
Red! Paint it red!
Green ain’t mean compared to red!

You don’t know what it does to me.
Yeah, that crimson sin intensity!
I’m haunted by the mystery,
yeah, yeah, the mystery of red, red, red! Read More

Bette Midler Confirms Broadway Role As Super Agent Sue Mengers ~ Opens April 24!

Bette Midler to Play Superagent Sue Mengers on Broadway

The recipe for a successful one-character play would, at minimum, seem to call for two things: a powerful woman to base it upon and a powerful woman to play her. And a newly announced theater project surely has both: Bette Midler will perform on Broadway for the first time in more than 30 years in a play about the Hollywood superagent Sue Mengers, its producers said on Monday. The play, called “I’ll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers,” is written by John Logan and will be directed by Joe Mantello, and is scheduled to open on April 24 at a Shubert theater still to be determined.
