Bette Midler On Her Lewdness In Her Act And In The Rose

Bette Midler On Her Lewdness In Her Act And In The Rose: “I’m much lewder in my real act than I am in the film. I had to change a lot of my physical style for the film. I’m a mincer. I wear very high heels. I’m known for skittering and pigeon-toeing my way across the stage very fast. I wanted the things I do while I sing in the film to be more violent of nature. My girlfriend, Toni Basil, a great rock n’ roll dancer who knows all the microphone moves and pop dances, spent time working with me on the moves for the movie.” (The Milwaukee Journal Dec 2, 1979) – Bette Midler Read More

LOS ANGELES— ”No,” said Bette Midler, flashing her familiar, sly grin, ”I’m not going to tell you. It’s the magic of movies.”

The flamboyant entertainer – who has long made comic capital out of her ample figure – was feeling coy when the subject turned to her striking, onscreen transformation from overweight to svelte in the new comedy ”Ruthless People.” Read More

BetteBack January 29, 1987: Midler On Movies, Life, And Babies

Syracuse Herald Journal
January 29, 1987

374837_223685077705137_2213

Midler and her husband, Harry Kipper, a performance artist and commodities trader, became the parents of Sophie Frederica Alohe Lani in November. Frederica was chosen in honor of Midler’s father, Fred, with whom she says she “made peace with a long time ago.” The Hawaiian, according to Midler, means “bright sky.”

Passing around a Polaroid of Sophie at 6 weeks, the new mother says, “She looks like both of us. She was an accident but a happy one. We may decide to have another at the end of the year.” Read More

Watch “Beaches” Performed By This Gay Comic In Less Than Four Minutes (Thanks Andy!)

Some queens will look for any reason to show off their Bette Midler impersonations. Add out comic performer Micah McCain to the list. The triple-threat entertainer takes aim at the gay-worshipped 1988 Midler-Barbara Hershey tearjerker Beaches and offers his singular take on the film’s highlights — except, oddly, it’s famous theme song “The Wind Beneath My Wings” — in less than four minutes. Brava!

Check it out below.

BetteBack January 28, 1986: ‘You mean I won’t live forever?’

Bette Midler in the fast track
Bette Midler interviews are funny, witty, stimulating.

It is suggested to Bette Midler
she will run out of time before she
runs out of ideas. Her reply is swift,
without trace of a smile.

“Oh no, don’t SAY that,” she
says. “You mean I won’t live forever?”
Trying to pin Bette Midler down
in a phrase or two is like trying to
play Name That Tune with the
motorman on a moving subway
train. Under anything resembling
normal circumstances, it cannot be
done. Read More

Midler on marriage … A year ago, after a two-month courtship (“The food was great”), Bette Midler, the queen of flash~and-trash, married Martin von Haselberg, a commodities trader.

“The best! What a relief! Glad that’s over with.'” she says of life as a 40-year-old newlywed. “I discovered that you have to give in order to get, and that’s a big thing to learn at my age, but I’m learning, and l like it.” Read More

Reminiscences on ‘A View from a Broad’

You never forget, nor should you want to, your first life-altering experience with the Divine Miss M.

Bette Midler first hit it big in the early 1970s with her swing-influenced pop hits, then got serious cred as an actress in 1979 when she starred in The Rose, a thinly-veiled biopic of Janis Joplin. But I was a kid back then, who thought of swing as something in my backyard, and The Rose was an R-rated film I wouldn’t be allowed to see for several more years. Read More

The Divine Miss M, better known as Bette Midler, has had a long career in the entertainment business. Born and raised in Hawaii, after a short-lived college stint in theater, she decided to make her way to New York City. Arriving in 1965, she was able to find work in the musical theater and appeared in several productions. After 3 years in Fiddler on the Roof, and another 2 years in Salvation, she started singing at the Continental Baths where she met her accompanist and future producer Barry Manilow. Her shows there earned her a large fan base, and she released her first album in late 1972. The Divine Miss M was a platinum smash hit record, and it spawned several hit singles which propelled her musical career into overdrive. Over the rest of the decade she recorded 3 more albums and had her first television special. She became a movie star with her silver screen debut, The Rose, in 1979, and has been a success and a celebrity ever since. Here are her 5 best and most successful movies. Read More
