17 COMEDIES THAT MAKE ABDUCTION FUN

17 COMEDIES THAT MAKE ABDUCTION FUN

A hostage situation is among the most traumatic experiences anyone can suffer through: your life in the hands of a stranger, who threatens to snuff it out for their own nefarious purposes or financial gain. But sometimes, Hollywood asks, isn’t abduction… kind of funny? Hey, maybe a kidnapping is just the sort of wild, unexpected detour you needed to really shake things up, help you learn important life lessons, and even fall in love—or so the movies have suggested over the years. The “hostage comedy” has fallen slightly out of favor since its apparent peak in 1994 (when no less than five films from this list were released) and somewhere after 1996’s bleakly funny, yet sobering Fargo finally reminded everyone that, don’tcha know, we’re talking about real people here. Still, the sub-genre is making something of a comeback in 2018, what with the Anna Faris-starring remake of Overboard hitting theaters in April, and FX’s Trust adding a dryly kooky flourish to the kidnapping of John Paul Getty III. Here are some of their predecessors that similarly found the hijinks in hijacking. Read More

TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991 (Bette Makes The List Twice)

Awards Circiut
TOP 10: LOOKING FOR OSCAR GLORY AFTER 1991
By Sam Coffey – Apr 4, 20180

ACCA 1991As voting continues in ACCA 1991, Awards Circuit celebrates the many great films of 1991, perhaps one of the most historic years in Oscar history.  A number of talented performers, directors, writers, and craftsmen were nominated (or won!) for their great achievements but have somehow not found their way back to the Dolby Theatre.  Mercifully, some actors who remained on this barren list for ages eventually found Oscar glory again, with Robert De Niro landing his first nomination since “Cape Fear” with “Silver Linings Playbook” and Laura Dern doing the same in 2014 with “Wild” following up her first nomination for “Rambling Rose.”  Unfortunately, too many winners and nominees from 1991 have passed away, failing to get back to Oscar since this year, including Jessica TandyJack Palance, cinematographer Adrian Biddle, and shockingly Jonathan Demme. Perhaps you noticed her as the smart, put-together lawyer working for Bernie Madoff in the recent HBO movie The Wizard of Lies. Or perhaps you clocked her as the similarly no-nonsense political staffer Tanya Benson in the just-released fifth season of Netflix’s House of Cards. Either way, Sophie von Haselberg has made her mark on some of the season’s most talked about releases—she also starred in and produced the short YOYO, which appeared at the Tribeca Film Festival. When you’re a buddng actress following in the footsteps of your Emmy, Grammy, and Golden Globe award-winning mother, there’s an added pressure to deliver. But for Sophie von Haselberg (whose mom happens to be Bette Midler), that pressure was alleviated by years of avoiding the industry all together. In an attempt to shake the acting bug, the 30-year-old New York native studied sociology and East Asian studies at Yale University. She even gave publishing a spin, and interned at Vanity Fair the summer before her senior year—but there was no escaping the irresistible pull of Hollywood. Read More

At long last, Bette Midler has set up her pet project “Texas Guinan” at Universal Pictures, with Martin Scorsese attached to direct and David Henry Hwang (“M. Butterfly“) to write the movie.

The project will be developed from “Texas Guinan: Queen of the Nightclubs” by Louise Berliner, whose grandfather was Guinan’s attorney during her notorious 1929 public nuisance trial. Her grandfather, it should be noted, got his client acquitted. Read More
