In the week ending July 30, 2017, the top earning show in terms of percentage reached of its gross potential was Kinky Boots, which was the 2013 Tony Award winner for Best Musical.  Spurred on by the recent addition of pop star Brendon Urie to the cast, Kinky Boots is experiencing a renaissance of its top box office days, which peaked in the holiday season at the end of 2013, as well as late summer 2013 following the show’s Tony success.  This past week, the weekly gross for Kinky Boots was $1,584,103, which is the highest weekly gross since Urie entered the cast.  This is an increase of $131,512 from the week before, and the grosses have been steadily increasing for the past 10 weeks.  Prior to that, the week ending May 28, 2017 had a weekly gross of just $796,424, after which a steep jump of $318,869 led the show on its current upward trend.  In terms of gross potential, Kinky Boots had the highest gross this past week at 125.99% of its gross potential. Broadway receipts were up slightly last week even as an old lesson held true: A hit that doesn’t hitch its wagon to a star is a better long-term bet than a star-driven vehicle. That was certainly the case for a couple of newsworthy shows, notably Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, which continued to slip following the departure of the musical’s Pierre, Josh Groban. Bette Midler Takes ‘Hello, Dolly!’ to New Heights

Bette Midler Takes ‘Hello, Dolly!’ to New Heights

Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Barbra Streisand … and now, Bette Midler. Not traditional American beauties, these Jewish self-made powerhouses project a magnetically endearing combination of warmth, humor and respectable sex appeal. They were born and raised in far less than comfortable circumstances. Through their talents, hard work and persistence, they achieved fame, fortune and admiration from fans all over the world. It is Bette Midler, however, who is probably the most beloved of these Jewish stars. The excitement she creates is palpable. She is a showstopper even before she opens her mouth to sing. In “Hello, Dolly!” adoring audiences rise to their feet to cheer and applaud. Such is her charisma. Read More

Goodbye, Dolly.

Without Bette Midler in the title role, the musical “Hello, Dolly!” fell to unheard of lows last week. The show sold less than half the dollar amount of its capacity– $722K out of a possible $1.5 million. It was down by $214,000 from the previous week, which was way down from its prior week. Northwest Ohio’s most legendary candy shop got a few very public shout-outs from legendary stage star Bette Midler this week, all thanks to a little meddling by hometown hero Gavin Creel.

Midler took to social media platforms Twitter and Instagram on Monday, posting a picture of a box of specially made “Bettezels” gifted to her by Dietsch Brothers. The posts read: “BEST CHOCOLATE COVERED PRETZELS IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD! And they created these “Bettezels” in my honor. Thank you!!” and have shined a national spotlight on the locally famous chocolatier. As of noon Wednesday, the tweet had been liked 2,445 times and the Instagram post was liked 6,884 times. DeBroadway went to the beach with New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie over what for many was the Independence Day weekend, as patrons stayed away in droves following the previous week’s banner stand. Ticket sales fell 9 percent over the week before, with the most dramatic plunge hitting the Bette Midler-free Hello, Dolly! With the Tony-winning star on vacation, ticket sales plummeted $1.37 million to $936,603 for eight performances despite great word-of-mouth for replacement Dolly Levi, Donna Murphy. Attendance fell as well, to 76 percent of capacity, with patrons paying on average $106.31 per ticket. (Midler returns July 12.) Read More

Hello, Benny?

“Dear Evan Hansen” star Ben Platt went fanboy while hosting the National High School Musical Theatre Awards on Monday night, gushing about “Hello, Dolly!” star Bette Midler and jokingly suggesting that the two Tony winners “swap roles.”

He even auditioned — though he failed the real test. Donning a red feathered headdress like the one Midler wears during her show’s delectable title song, Platt was forced to admit he didn’t have the chops. “This thing’s heavy,” he said. Read More

“She has done us all proud!”

Bette Midler was the dame of the evening at Sunday’s Tonys, winning the award for Best Actress in a Musical for Hello Dolly—and telling producers to “Shut that crap off!” when they tried to play her off.

In her speech, Midler thanked producers, mentors and co-stars, as well as Carol Channing, who originated the role of Dolly Levi in the show’s original 1964 Broadway production. Read More

“Hello, Dolly!” Surges with Bette Midler – Donna Murphy Combo

New York Show Tickets
Hello, Dolly!” Surges with Bette MidlerDonna Murphy Combo
POSTED ON JUNE 23, 2017 BY JENNIFER R JONES

2017-06-22_2-22-24

In the week ending June 18, 2017, Hello, Dolly!, which has already been performing stupendously at the box office, reached new heights in its first 8-performance week of the run.  The reason is that Donna Murphy (The People in the Picture, Lovemusik, Wonderful Town) stepped into the role of Dolly Levi on Tuesday night performances, giving Bette Midler the night off, and also upping the show’s production schedule to the usual eight performances, while it had previously been thriving with just seven.  This past week, the weekly gross was $2,297,057, which is an increase of $275,031 from the week before, and which is less than $50,000 below the heights achieved by the unbelievable Hamilton this past week.  With a top ticket price of $748, the average paid admission for Hello, Dolly! was $196.23, and the audience was filled up to 101.5% of capacity.  The weekly gross represented 125.5% of its gross potential, beating Hamilton by a large margin, as that show brought in just 115.6% of gross potential, while Wicked brought in 110.1% of gross potential.  While Bette Midler was already a very hot ticket, adding Donna Murphy to the mix just once a week proves that she is only adding fuel to the fire, and Hello, Dolly! may outlive Bette Midler after all.
