Liz Smith, popular NY gossip columnist, dead at 94
11/12/2017

Gossip columnist Liz Smith, whose mixture of banter, barbs, and bon mots about the glitterati helped her climb the A-list as high as many of the celebrities she covered, has died.

Literary agent Joni Evans told The Associated Press she died in New York on Sunday of natural causes. She was 94.

For more than a quarter-century, Smith’s column — titled “Liz Smith” — was one of the most widely read in the world. Its success was due in part to Smith’s own celebrity status, giving her insider access rather than relying largely on tipsters, press releases and publicists. She also made occasional appearances on Fox News Channel. Read More

BetteBack March 3, 1975: Friends Commission Neon Portrait Of Midler

Ames Daily Tribune
March 3, 1975

bette-korvettesposter

NEW YORK (UPI) — Rudi Stern says neon has been getting a raw deal all these years. Behind all those beer signs lurk an art form.

Neon has been the captive of one industry, namely signage, said Stern at his lower Manhattan studio.  There s no reason for it to be captive to signage.

At his shop, called  Let There Be Neon, he is breaking the barriers that once relegated neon to tavern windows and rundown neighborhoods.

An offshoot is a workshop for those who want to decorate their apartments with neon sculpture. Read More

A divine showing of divas put the ‘broad’ in Broadway

The Washington Post
A divine showing of divas put the ‘broad’ in Broadway
By Karen Heller April 6 at 2:03 PM

2017-04-06_3-28-03

NEW YORK — In the beginning, there was Ethel.

Merman, the legend who required no introduction or microphone.

Ethel begot icons such as Mary Martin, Liza Minnelli and Barbra Streisand, divas known to their loyal subjects by first names only, as though they were dear friends.

In musical theater, there is nothing like a dame, a star of great voice, astonishing presence and dazzling wattage. A diva’s acting chops match her vocal power. She masticates the scenery. She leaves a mark. She sports her pain like pearls. Hurt and indomitability define her, conveyed in a multi-octave, act-concluding anthem that tears down the house and obliterates all memory of everyone else on stage. Read More

Lawrence Journal World

Fashion in 1974 is not dictated by authorities or names or peers, but by needs, living patterns, individually and personal preference, New York fashion coordinator Virginia Sorem said recently in Kansas City.

Nowhere is this fashion definition better expressed than on the college campus.

Ms. Sorem, who selects all the women’s clothing for the J.C. Penney catalogue each season, said in 1974” there are no trends, there are concepts.”

THE CONCEPT of easy living reigns supreme on the Kansas University campus. Despite the fashion prognostication of an end to the blue jean uniform of years past, it will continue. Read More

Bette Midler On The First Wive’s Club:

Bette Midler On The First Wive’s Club: “There are a lot of angry women around, and they were rooting for us. I’ve been saying for years, “What are we, girls, but waitresses at the banquet of life? I mean, I knew this picture couldn’t flop. And the three girls really got along well. Diane (Diane Keaton) is so low-key. I mean she hasn’t even SEEN movies that she was in. I’d look at the videos, and I’d say ‘It’s OK, girls. But let’s do it again.” (Brownsville Herald, April 14, 1997) Read More
