BetteBack April 16, 1975: Clams On The Half Shell Opens

Bucks County Courier
April 16, 1975

BROADWAY WAS LIKE A carnival last night. Six to 7000 people pushing and shoving in just one block — wild, desrespectful and wonderful Bette Midler opening at the Minskoff, everlastingly beautiful Ingrid Bergman opening in “The Constant Wife” at the Shubert.

Bette’s cultists wore from Dracula outfits to white-tie-and-canes and gave her numerous ovations and a huge one to Lionel Hampton.

I’m partial to Bette’s talking.

Too bad about the Bicentennial: “All New York’s revolutionary landmarks are now gay bars” … “Jerry Minskoff built this theater so he can remember how to spell his name. It has the warmth of a Ramadalnn.” Read More

Liz Smith, popular NY gossip columnist, dead at 94

Liz Smith, popular NY gossip columnist, dead at 94
11/12/2017

Gossip columnist Liz Smith, whose mixture of banter, barbs, and bon mots about the glitterati helped her climb the A-list as high as many of the celebrities she covered, has died.

Literary agent Joni Evans told The Associated Press she died in New York on Sunday of natural causes. She was 94.

For more than a quarter-century, Smith’s column — titled “Liz Smith” — was one of the most widely read in the world. Its success was due in part to Smith’s own celebrity status, giving her insider access rather than relying largely on tipsters, press releases and publicists. She also made occasional appearances on Fox News Channel. Read More

BetteBack March 3, 1975: Friends Commission Neon Portrait Of Midler

Ames Daily Tribune

NEW YORK (UPI) — Rudi Stern says neon has been getting a raw deal all these years. Behind all those beer signs lurk an art form.

Neon has been the captive of one industry, namely signage, said Stern at his lower Manhattan studio.  There s no reason for it to be captive to signage.

At his shop, called  Let There Be Neon, he is breaking the barriers that once relegated neon to tavern windows and rundown neighborhoods.

An offshoot is a workshop for those who want to decorate their apartments with neon sculpture. Read More

To say it’s going well for Bette Midler would be an understatement.

Last night (20 April) the star officially opened Hello, Dolly! to rave reviews.

And to honor the day of Midler’s big Broadway return, New York City’s mayor Bill de Blasio had a very special opening night gift.

Midler tweeted an image of an official proclamation declaring 21 April shall now be known as Dolly Day.

‘Wow, wow, wow, fellas! Look at the old gal now,’ Midler tweeted. Read More
