“Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned From Eighties Movies” by Hadley Freeman, Simon and Schuster, 339 pages, $16 paperback original.

Let’s start with “Steel Magnolias.” What is widely known now as as the Bechdel Movie Test for well-represented women in movies, came from cartoonist Allison Bechdel whose formulation was: A movie “has to have at least two women in it. 2) Who talk to each other. 3) About something besides a man.” U. K. Guardian columnist Freeman formulates the “Magnolia Test” to determine “whether or not a movie is a proper women’s movie: 1) The cast is largely, maybe even solely, female. 2) The female characters talk to each other about a million things other than men and genuinely like each other .3) And the relationship between the women is far more important than any they have with a man. 4) Bonus points if any of the following are in the film: Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Olympia Dukakis. Triple for Sally Field.” Read More

GOP passed a health care bill so bad they exempted themselves from it. They may live longer, but when they die, it’s straight to hell!” said Midler.

House Republicans voted Thursday (May 4) to approve a controversial health care bill, that would repeal and replace elements of Obamacare.

Musicians including Katy Perry, John Legend, Bette Midler and more reacted in disgust to the divisive political action.

Perry encouraged her followers to call their senators to vote down the bill when they are called to vote on it next. Meanwhile, Legend jumped to action putting his money here is mouth is by donating to 2018 Democratic congressional challengers and Hayley Williams of Paramore channeled the day’s “May the 4th be with you” meme to draw parallels between the U.S. and the Galactic Empire. Bette Midler. At KeyArena, Seattle, last night. ——————————-

“I hear you’re in the market for a new police chief,” declared Bette Midler at KeyArena last night. “Well, look no further: I’m your gal.”

Sorry, Bette – you’re a lot better at gleefully disturbing the peace than you would be enforcing it. Read More

The original 1988 Bette Midler/Barbara Hershey  film is one of the most beloved weepies of all time. So this remake comes with high expectations – that it sadly doesn’t meet.

CC (Idina Menzel) and Hillary (Nia Long) are lifelong friends who support each other through respective ups (careers) and downs (illness).

The update (set in SoCal instead of New Jersey) maintains the same beats as the original, but unfortunately Menzel doesn’t have the same comedic chops as Midler, and the film can feel a little flat. Read More

BetteBack February 18, 1973: Wrinkled Records

Winona Daily News
February 18, 1973

There Is an oldies boom in progress. Songs, singers and styles echoing an earlier time in music are becoming a minor phenomenon of the season. Think about It: Johnny Rivers has a hit single! Not only is Rivers an anachronism, but so is the song, “Rockln’ Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu”. In 1973? It doesn’t end there.

Elton John’sCrocodile Rock” is an ebullient call to the Miles: “I remember when rock was young/me and Susie had so much fun.” And then: “But the years went by and rock just died/Susie went and left me for some other guy/long nights cryln’ by the record machine/dreamln’ of my Chevy and my old blue jeans.” The cover shows a young couple going Into a movie house. He’s wearing jeans, sneakers, leather jacket, and greasy D.A. His date In flats, pony tail, gathered ankle length skirt and pink sweater. And parked at the curb, a chrome-soaked Plymouth. The Marquee Flashing “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player” starring Elton John. Read More

BETTE MIDLER, basking in rave reviews for her starring role in the war musical “For The Boys,” says she’s determined to restore the musical to its former glory. “All the people who knew how to do them well have died off,” Midler told Nashville-based The Tennessean in an interview published Friday. “Nobody set up an apprenticeship program to bring Midler on new people . Bette Midler Makes Fun Of My “Delores Mermaid Doll” On “The Graham Norton Show”

I was in El Lay for the premiere of Cher’s And Xtina’s movie “Burleqsque” when I got a call from “The Graham Norton Show” wanting some silly paraphanalia for guest Bette Midler to riff with on the show, so I called my friend Barry in Nashville to go through my boxes and find anything Bette-related. They were particularly interested in my Delores DeLago and Divine Madness dolls, along with my 30 year old “The Rose” Beach Blanket! Well that part of the show got dumped, much to the dismay of my jealous haters, but I finally found a photo of her holding my Delores Doll still in it’s box…..I loved it! Read More
