“When my guts tell me to go, I go. I wanted to go last year (2002) but I wasn’t strong enough. . . .

“When my guts tell me to go, I go. I wanted to go last year (2002) but I wasn’t strong enough. . . . I was pretty tired last year: 9/11 took a big toll on everybody. We were doing lots and lots of benefits, lots of memorials. It was going on and on for a long time, a very sad time. I feel a little bit better now, so here we are.” (Detroit Free Press, Jan 4, 2004)

“You have to hang on to your health,” says Midler, who turned 58 on Dec. 1.

“You have to hang on to your health,” says Midler, who turned 58 on Dec. 1. “You have to hang on to your wind, so you have to run on the treadmill.” It all boils down to this: “When you go on the road, you’re going into retreat for as long as the tour lasts. Otherwise you don’t make it. “Basically, you live like a monk.” (Detroit Free Press, Jan 4, 2004)

Q: What’s this about Bette Midler making her film debut as the Virgin Mary?

A: lt’s a three-year old, jazzed-up home-movie spoof titled “The Divine Mr. J” that emerged from the can only when the Divine Miss M emerged from obscurity. “We turned down a Mike Nichols film, for Heaven’s sake,” says her manager. “Now this piece of (vulgarity deleted) comes out.”

1. Deep Blue Sea

The premise is ridiculous, the acting questionable and – with adult eyes – the special effects leave a lot to be desired. But Deep Blue Sea has left me with a great big, bloody shark bite-shaped scar. Ten-year-old me unwisely watched this certificate 15 film on VHS during a sleep over. It follows a group of scientists on an isolated research facility who are hunted by their own insanely intelligent lab sharks.
Naturally I didn’t let out a single squeak during the movie and never mentioned the lasting, terrifying impact it had had on my young and impressionable brain to my friends. But boy did me (and my extended family) live to regret that rental choice. Read More

My parents (mother Ruth a seamstress, father Fred a painter) were not encouraging.

My parents (mother Ruth a seamstress, father Fred a painter) were not encouraging. My father put everybody down. Yeah, it was a real drag but he had his moments. His saving grace was a wicked sense of humour. He was a good provider. They were a team. They were at Pearl Harbour, they knew hardship. My mum was supportive, she had a tinge of showbiz fever and named me and my sisters after Hollywood icons. My dad was like “Get a job”. But that gave me something to fight against.

Hillary Clinton ducked out for a quick bathroom break as Saturday’s two-hour Democratic candidates’ debate broke for a commercial and hurried back to her podium with the cameras already back on.

The trip to the ladies’ room has become the latest target of the vulgar humor that Donald Trump so often directs at women.

“She was going to beat Obama: She was going to beat — she was favored to win and she got schlonged,” Trump told a Grand Rapids, Mich., rally Monday. Read More
