Review: In ‘Freak Show,’ the Boy Who Would be Homecoming Queen

NYT
Review: In ‘Freak Show,’ the Boy Who Would be Homecoming Queen
FREAK SHOW Directed by Trudie Styler Comedy, Drama 1h 35m
By GLENN KENNYJAN. 11, 2018

What can you say about an adolescent American boy who is able to accurately quote Oscar Wilde? You can call him precocious, but in the case of Billy Bloom (Alex Lawther), who we first see quoting the Irish writer and dandy in a flashback recalling sunnier times in his childhood, that’s not enough.

Born into great wealth, the hero of “Freak Show” initially rhapsodizes to the audience about his mother (Bette Midler, going big in her scant screen time), whom he calls “Muv,” praising her as “a living testament to grace, glamour and Gucci.” Life with Muv was sweet, but after she enters rehab, Billy must reside at the mansion of his father (Larry Pine), who’s not happy about Billy’s rejection of conventional masculinity. Sophie von Haselberg has completed another movie entitled, Ask For Jane, Set For 2018 Release

Mister D: Sophie von Haselberg has completed another movie entitled, Ask For Jane, which is based on real events. It’s the story of a group of college aged women who develop “an underground abortion network that helped over 10,000 women get illegal abortions in Chicago between 1968 and 1973. The movie gets high praise from feminist warrior, Gloria Steinem. Rachel Carey directed and wrote the script. It’s scheduled to be released in 2018

Plot Summary: In 1968 Chicago, young college student Susan takes a step outside her normal, sheltered life to help a desperate friend find a safe but illegal abortion. Susan and her more radical dormmate Janice form a friendship as they start providing the doctor’s number to other desperate women — until the doctor angrily refuses to help them. Instead of giving up, the young women decide to think bigger. Susan and her friends form the Jane Collective: a secret organization to help other women obtain safe abortions by connecting them with doctors who will provide the service safely and at low cost. Susan sacrifices her career plans, her boyfriend, and even her relationship with her mother in the name of helping women in need. When the women of Jane are eventually arrested, they face the ultimate test of their commitment to the cause and to each other. Read More

Bette Midler On “The Rose” Character:

Bette Midler On “The Rose” Character: “No, it’s not a thinly veiled movie about Janis Joplin. Although there will be drinks, drugs, love and destruction. “She is a composite of all kinds of people trying to survive that decade.” (The Australian Women’s Weekly, 1977)

Why Bette Midler Wants To Do A Concert Movie After The Rose:

Why Bette Midler Wants To Do A Concert Movie After The Rose: “I love to sing. And I think people love it when you sing. I do, My stage act is kind of ‘low rent.’ My act is like a stripper with a little bit of education. I do a lot of double entendre stuff. Some of it is quite, quite gross. That’s really what I’m known for. I’d like to do a film in which I do that. I’m gonna.” (The Milwaukee Journal – Dec 2, 1979)

“Scenes From A Mall” Released On Blu-Ray

Mister D: This reviewer vilifies this movie, but I always liked. I thought it was one of Midler’s most understated and under appreciated roles:

Scenes from a Mall (Blu-ray)
Mill Creek / 1991 / 87 Minutes / Rated R

The Movie Itself: Our Reviewer‘s Take

This may sound cruel and disgusting to say, but actually engaging in an awkward one time extramarital affair, and then living with the guilt of doing so for the rest of your life may be a more enjoyable experience than spending 87 minutes sitting down to Paul Mazursky‘s ‘Scenes from a Mall.’ Ignore the obvious reference to Ingmar Bergman and ‘Scenes from a Marriage‘ in the title: there’s nothing classy, introspective, or original to be found here. The only things foreign in this film are a purpose, a point, relevance, chemistry, intrigue, humor, wit, insight, drama, sex appeal, believability…get it? I started out the sentence like it was something minor, and then it turned out to be pretty much the entire film? Ah…I kill me. Read More
