Q: What’s this about Bette Midler making her film debut as the Virgin Mary?

For Bette Midler fans, don’t get too excited when you see the hype for a new movie, “The Divine Mr. J.”

The publicity people would have us believe it’s a new movie starring the Divine Miss M as the Virgin Mary in a religious Satire. Truth of the matter is the film was made three years ago in Detroit and Bette’s part is a bit .,. .

NEW YORK — A brigade of outspoken women is poised to take over Broadway this season, turning New York stages into personal podiums and, quite possibly, pedestals.

For these are women (and one young girl) who have inspired veneration and emulation through the years — and, in one notable case, through millenniums.

Hailing from the worlds of American politics, Hollywood, children’s literature, urban fable and the Bible, they are figures prone to saying what other people won’t or can’t. This means that even when these characters whisper, their voices carry the volume of bullhorns. Read More

A brigade of outspoken women is poised to take over Broadway this season, turning big New York stages into personal podiums and, quite possibly, pedestals. For these are women (and one little girl) who have inspired veneration and emulation throughout the years — in one case through millenniums.

From left, Milly Shapiro, Sophia Gennusa, Oona Laurence and Bailey Ryon of “Matilda the Musical.”

The Voice of Broadway
By JACKO’BRIAN

Patricia Lanigan of E. Meadow, N.Y., askes if Bette Midler has a “religious” flick due; yes, more irreligious, however: it’s a cheapie ($30,000) in more ways than money: it’s an ineptie, too – titled originally “The Greatest Story Ever Overtold,” a candidly sacrilegious story of Jesus and Mary, so bad it wasn’t released, nor even escaped, since it was slapped onto celluloid three years ago.
