Liz Smith, popular NY gossip columnist, dead at 94
11/12/2017

Gossip columnist Liz Smith, whose mixture of banter, barbs, and bon mots about the glitterati helped her climb the A-list as high as many of the celebrities she covered, has died.

Literary agent Joni Evans told The Associated Press she died in New York on Sunday of natural causes. She was 94.

For more than a quarter-century, Smith’s column — titled “Liz Smith” — was one of the most widely read in the world. Its success was due in part to Smith’s own celebrity status, giving her insider access rather than relying largely on tipsters, press releases and publicists. She also made occasional appearances on Fox News Channel. Read More

Bette Midler just signed on to star in the romantic farce “That Old Feeling” for Sid, Bill, and Jon Sheinberg’s new Bubble Factory Productions.

Carl Reiner will direct Midler from an original screenplay by Leslie Dixon, who penned “Outrageous Fortune,” Bette’s big smash of several years back. She also wrote Robin Williams‘ “Mrs. Doubtfire.” “That Old Feeling” concerns a couple, long and acrimoniously divorced, who meet again at their daughter’s wedding and run off together. Read More

"I'll Eat You Last: A Chat With Sue Mengers" Broadway Opening Night

“S—W ‘EM if they can’t take a joke,” goes the famous Bette Midler line. I’ve always considered this the perfect retort to — just about anything!

ON THE day the Drama Desk announced a nomination for Bette Midler’s one-person show about the Hollywood agent Sue Mengers, the audience at the Wednesday matinee last week exploded into applause and laughter again and again. This was my second time seeing “I’ll Eat You Last” and I enjoyed Bette’s joie de vivre and her heartfelt sadness alternating with the character. She “becomes” Sue Mengers, dishing Hollywood to the last vivid drop. Read More

BetteBack October 9, 1993: Bette Midler Makes Scalper History

Indiana Gazette
Scoop
Liz Smith
October 9, 1993

Bette Midler is not Just making box-office history at Badio City Music Hall, where she Is wowing ’em until Oct. 23. She’s also making scalper history. Choice – even semi-choice – Midler seats are going for as high as $600 each!!

Bette is very, very pleased with the success of “Experience the Divine,” but insiders say she’s a bit surprised at how restrained many of her Manhattan audiences have been. Bette is used to total hysteria from beginning to end. In New York, sometimes, the audience doesn’t “let go” until the midway point. Read More

“GOD HAD to create disco music so I could be born and be successful.” — Donna Summer

DIM ALL the lights … what a shock — Donna Summer’s death from cancer last week. A little bit of my relative youth gone. How well I recall nights at Studio 54, and other clubs of the ’70s and ’80s, with Donna’s groundbreaking music blaring.

In 2003, I attended Bette Midler‘s Hulaween Ball. Donna was the special guest entertainment. She had been laying low for a few years. The audience was tense with anticipation. Donna appeared, gorgeous. She opened her mouth, began to sing and it was Studio 54 all over again. Still magnificent. The entire audience went berserk. By the time she finished, delirium had set in. BetteBack July 3, 1993: “I Killed Myself Making A Picture For A Grown-Up Audience…”

Indiana Gazette
Scoop

July 3, 1993

Endquotes: Leave it to Rex Reed, star-profiler deluxe, to get the right stuff from the Divine One Herself – Betto Midler.

Rex interviewed Bette on the set of her coming Disney film, “Hocus Focus,” for Premiere magazine.

On the failure of “For the Boys“: “I killed myself making a picture for a grown-up audience, only to discover the grown-ups for whom it was made don’t go to movies anymore. We devised a brilliant marketing campaign for Fox, and Barry Diller rejected it, so nobody knew how to sell or promote It….I gave them my heart, my soul and my guts, and they didn’t want it. Now, I’m going to give them what they want.” (“Hocus Pocus,” presumably.) Read More
