Broadway offered something for everyone last week, as long as everyone was loaded with dough. Face-value ducats topped out at $1,150 for blockbuster Hamilton, but that was Monopoly money considering the going rate for fans of Bette Midler (nearing the spectacular end of her spectacular run in Hello, Dolly!) and Bruce Springsteen (whose work week is limited to five performances at the 948-seat Walter Kerr). Broadway Grosses: Bette Midler and Holland Taylor Say Bye to Broadway with Box Office Bump
NEWS By Marc Snetiker July 1, 2013 – 5:21PM

USA: Bette Midler's 12th Annual Spring Picnic

Bette Midler and Holland Taylor’s one-woman shows may have bid their farewells to Broadway on June 30, but the fierce ladies managed to rake in slight box office bumps as the curtain fell on I’ll Eat You Last and Ann. Meanwhile, shows like Kinky Boots, Wicked, The Book of Mormon and The Lion King continued their triumphant box-office busting runs, while Matilda and Motown topped their own records at the Shubert and Lunt-Fontanne Theatres, respectively. Tourism And Tonys Up The Ante On Broadway

Variety
Pippin‘ tops $1 million as ‘Kinky Boots‘ and ‘Matilda’ reap post-kudocast gains

USA: Bette Midler's 12th Annual Spring Picnic

Summer tourism and the PR boost of the Tony Awards combined to land 11 Broadway shows in the millionaires’ club last week, with the four trophies scored by “Pippin” helping that revival to break the $1 million barrier for the first time.

The $1,009,392 logged by “Pippin” reps a particularly strong showing for a show playing in a venue with only 990 seats, the smallest of any show that grossed more than $1 million last week. The production had already been gaining momentum, but it was no doubt helped along by the June 9 Tonycast showcasing the title’s four wins (including one for musical revival) as well as a performance seg from the production. Liz Smith On The Tonys

Huffington Post
‘Kinky Boots’ wins big on Tony Night
June 11, 2013

“IT IS a hopeless endeavor to attract people to the theater unless they can first be brought to believe they’ll never get in.” — Charles Dickens

EVEN IF you didn’t see or didn’t like “Kinky Boots” the fabulous show that won best musical at the Tony Awards Sunday night, how could you not love Cyndi Lauper‘s emotional acceptance speech? Cyndi won her Tony for writing the music and lyrics to the show. (Harvey Fierstein did the book.) Lauper is such an original, and true to herself, always. Perhaps too original and too true to have made the music industry predictions of 1984 come to fruition — that Lauper was the real (if quirky) talent who’d be a superstar forever, and Madonna was just a trashy flash-in-the-pan, soon forgotten. Both rocketed to superstardom in ’84. Read More

No Box-Office Boost For Most Tony Nominees, But….

No Box-Office Boost For Most Tony Nominees

4.187047

“So far, only two of the four top-nominated shows” – Kinky Boots and Pippin have seen an uptick in ticket sales,” with Matilda’s receipts actually dipping slightly. (On the other hand, Bette Midler‘s one-woman show I’ll Eat You Last, snubbed by Tony, saw a 17% increase in income.) Los Angeles Times 05/07/13

The new Broadway musical “Kinky Boots” led the pack with 13 nominations for the 67th annual Tony Awards, including for best musical, director, actor, score, and choreographer, while its chief rival “Matilda” had 12 nominations in many of the same categories. The nominations were announced at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The revival of “Golden Boy” had the most nominations of any play, 8, with the new Tom Hanks play “Lucky Guy” close behind with 6 nominations. Lead acting nods went to only a handful of the Hollywood stars performing on Broadway this season – Mr. Hanks, Laurie Metcalf, Holland Taylor, and Cicely Tyson; among those snubbed were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Katie Holmes, Scarlett Johansson, and Al Pacino. Among the surprises were snubs of “Motown” for a best musical nomination and its star, Brandon Victor Dixon, for best actor. Read More
