Calling Bette Midler a singer is like calling a hot fudge sundae food you’re right, but there is a lot more to it.

Miss Midler’s dynamic delivery and one-of-a-kind style have made her The Divine Miss M  to thousands of devoted fans. Her records turn to gold, her concerts sell overnight.

“I guess the extra ingredient is energy,” the flaming redhead explains in her distinctive New York twang.”I was hyperactive as a child, and I still can’t stay put.” Read More

A: lt’s a three-year old, jazzed-up home-movie spoof titled “The Divine Mr. J” that emerged from the can only when the Divine Miss M emerged from obscurity. “We turned down a Mike Nichols film, for Heaven’s sake,” says her manager. “Now this piece of (vulgarity deleted) comes out.”

BetteBack April 1974: Bette Midler by Bette Midler

Bette Midler: Bette Midler (Atlantic)
April 1974

41uIWA1z-CL._SS500_

ALL THIS diverse material – old Broadway show tunes, a Phil Spector classic, a Wardell Gray jazz novelty, soul songs, Dylan – you can almost hear those presenting Bette murmuring, “See how versatile she is?”

The singer herself doesn’t project that sort of pretension, but her unfortunate misunderstanding of the material, her inability or unwillingness to distinguish between the real and the artificial, the astigmatism that has her seeing camp as humor and pathos as tragedy are all as insidious as the adulation of her adoring audience. Yes, she does lots of different types of songs. But she does nearly all of them wrong. Read More

BetteBack December 14, 1973: Bette Midler Comes Down To Earth On Second Album

Wheeling Herald
December 14, 1973

41uIWA1z-CL._SS500_

“Bette Midler” (Atlantic records). The Divine Miss M has come down to earth on this her second album. I found the first side mostly dull as she does slow versions of “Skylark,” “Drinking Again” and ” Surabaya Johnny.” The way she does Bob Dylan’s” I Shall Be Released” seemed in bad taste.

With fairly good versions of”Lullaby of Broadway” and “Uptown/Da Doo Run Run,” side two is better, but still not equal to the quality of her first album, “The Divine Miss M.” Miss Midler tends to be a bit too theatrical at times and many of those unfortunate moments can be found in this album. Multitalented performer Bette Midler has her sun and Mercury in Sagittarius giving her a super confident nature, with a super warm quality.

With her moon and Venus both deposited in Scorpio, Midler is an intense entertainer, comfortable revealing emotion through her characters, while keeping her own sensibilities a private affair.

BetteBack October 8, 1973: It had been a bad few days for Bette Midler

Albuquerque Journal
October 8, 1973

bettemidler1973

By the time Bette Midler began the second half of her sold-out Popejoy Hall concert — dressed in red sleaze and carrying “recycled” fox carcasses — her voice was falling apart.

It had been a bad few days for Bette. One of the members of her back-up trio, The Harlettes, had been busted for drugs in Phoenix and Bette was mad as hell.

She was also getting sick about it all, been on tour since Aug. 25.

Later, she moved into John Prine‘s song about old people, “Hello in There,” not an easy melody to sing at th e best of times. The voice cracked, she whispered her way through it and she brought if off. For a moment, it was like being in a time-warp; Judy Garland, at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, drunk or stoned on too much of something, trying to get through “Stormy Weather” with the audience pushing for her as hard as it could. The other night I caught Sandra Bernhard’s HBO special. Seven months pregnant, at the time of the taping, Bernhard wears a tight transparent dress. She’s ‘out there’ in every way!

This is one major talent. She can act, perform outrageously funny stand up, and sing. And I mean she can really sing. She reminds me of another dazzling triple threat gal, the early Bette Midler, before the Divine One calmed down.

But I sense that Sandra is going to be taking her career a lot more seriously now and doing some calming down herself a bit. Raising another human being is no joke. Her old friend, Madonna, could have told her that. But they’re still kind of on the outs. Read More
