It’s best not to be too pompous about yourself.

It’s best not to be too pompous about yourself. It’s better not to need a limousine for your head. Although people think I’m just ‘divine,’ I have my share of worries. I worry about growing old and losing my shape, my looks, my hair. As an entertainer, that’s my stock and trade. Oh, and I also worry that I don’t dance as well as Michael Jackson. – Bette Midler

BetteBack April 1974: Bette Midler by Bette Midler

Bette Midler: Bette Midler (Atlantic)
April 1974

41uIWA1z-CL._SS500_

ALL THIS diverse material – old Broadway show tunes, a Phil Spector classic, a Wardell Gray jazz novelty, soul songs, Dylan – you can almost hear those presenting Bette murmuring, “See how versatile she is?”

The singer herself doesn’t project that sort of pretension, but her unfortunate misunderstanding of the material, her inability or unwillingness to distinguish between the real and the artificial, the astigmatism that has her seeing camp as humor and pathos as tragedy are all as insidious as the adulation of her adoring audience. Yes, she does lots of different types of songs. But she does nearly all of them wrong. Read More

Bette Midler On Songs She Loves But Would Never Sing:

Bette Midler On Songs She Loves But Would Never Sing: “There’s so many songs that I love that I know I will never sing. I love all of Bob Dylan and I don’t think I’ve ever sung a Bob Dylan song (she’s sung several). There’s plenty of Joni Mitchell (she’s sung several). There’s plenty of Prince. There’s plenty of Carole King (she’s sung several). There’s plenty of Oasis.” (The Free Lance-Star – Nov 8, 2004)

BetteBack October 30, 1988: Lainie Kazan Plays Bette Midler’s Mother In Beaches

QUESTION: What’s this about Lainie Kazan, the ever-chubby singer-actress, losing a lot ofweight? Is she sick or something? CW

ANSWER: It’s true that Lainie has dropped some weight. But she did it voluntarily; It had nothing to do with being sick. In quite another sense, however, Kazan tells me she is indeed sick — sick of playing fatsos on the screen. Once a voluptuous sexpot nightclub singer, she now yearns for the old days. So she went on a tough diet-exercise regimen and dropped some 39 pounds. In her latest flick, “Beaches,” opposite Bette Midler, Lainie plays yet another overweight mama. The film is due around Christmas. After that, she promises, It’s going to be strictly lithesome Lainie. Read More

BetteBack 1976: Bette Throws A Right Punch At Radio Promoter

Indiana Evening Gazette
Leisure Viewpoint
January 31, 1976

Bette’s Smash Hits: Bette Midler recently proved how much she appreciates good, honest criticism when she inserted her fist into a Los Angeles radio station program director‘s eye. What provoked the one-sided fisticuffs was his confession that he did not personally care for her latest album but would, not object to its airplay .
