Featuring The Harlettes: The Black & White Sessions : Paulette McWilliams : “At Seventeen” (June 18, 2018)

Mister D: I thought I’d start featuring the Harlettes Bette Midler has gainfully employed over the decades. You know they had to be super-talented and well-rounded to work with the hard driving Miss M. I’ve featured some in the past, but I keep running into their projects and I’d like to pay some respect when I can. So we’ll start out with Ms. Paulette McWilliams who worked with Ms. Midler in 1979-1980. Ms. Williams does an awesome job on one of my favorite songs, At Seventeen, written by the incredible Janis Ian (Some People’s Lives) Read More

Former Harlette, Ula Hedwig, Has A Track On The New Album ‘Celebrate’ By Win Marcinak

Unlike the blues, dance music has long been the province of gay men, as both performers and fans. On Celebrate (Burning Tyger), Win Marcinak blends covers (Three Dog Night’s “Celebrate,” Sylvester’s “Disco Heat/Mighty Real,” Kajagoogoo’s “Too Shy,” and Aretha’s “Rock Steady”) with originals. Ulla Hedwig, one of Bette Midler’s original Harlettes, sings with Marcinak on “We Are What We Are.”

BetteBack May 14, 1975: ‘Clams’ Does Nothing But Entertain

“Clams on the Half Shell,” Minskoff Theatre — The Divine Miss M (Bette Midler) in her new self-styped “taste-free” revue does nothing but ENTERTAIN. The show opens with a very well executed overture consisting of a medley from “Oklahoma!” An all-black chorus sings “Old Man River” while pulling in fish nets which dredge up a huge clam shell in which Miss M. is ensconced.

Hence the revue’s name.

FROM THAT moment on, she is in complete control — singing, dancing, chatting with the audience and telling jokes. (“McDonald’s is featuring a new Hearstburger — no Patty.” or “I know what a bisexual is, but what’s a bicentennial?” Read More
