Bette Midler On Her Music:

Bette Midler On Her Music: “I never intended to concentrate on oldies. In fact, I don’t. I sing contemporary numbers as well. But everyone has seized on the way I sing oldies, so I guess that’s my strength.” (Times-Picayune, November 6, 1977)

BetteBack December 14, 1973: Bette Midler Comes Down To Earth On Second Album

With fairly good versions of”Lullaby of Broadway” and “Uptown/Da Doo Run Run,” side two is better, but still not equal to the quality of her first album, “The Divine Miss M.” Miss Midler tends to be a bit too theatrical at times and many of those unfortunate moments can be found in this album. On What Bette Midler Would Like Out Of Stardom: “I would like to be loved the way Charlie Chaplin was loved.”

On What Bette Midler Would Like Out Of Stardom: “I would like to be loved the way Charlie Chaplin was loved.” She looks up at the tinfoil portrait of the Little Tramp over her mantel, “I guess that’s what makes you perform. It’s like that constant search for all that affection and attention that you never had when you were young.” (The Toronto Star, February 24, 1973)

I had the great pleasure to enjoy a number of Dolly Levi encounters. Mrs. Levi is the name of the leading character in the Tony Award winning musical “Hello, Dolly!” with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, a book by Michael Stewart and based on “The Matchmaker,” a play by Thornton Wilder.

David Merrick was the legendary producer of the original 1964 production and over the years, it was a Broadway and touring showcase for a number of great ladies of theatre and film, from Ethel Merman and Mary Martin to Ginger Rogers. Read More
