Bette Midler On Why She Took Off For A Year:

Bette Midler On Why She Took Off For A Year:”Everything happened so fast,” she said. “There was a lot of pushing and shoving, people grabbing at me, grabbing at the show I had worked two years with only two weeks off, appearing in a lot of strange places hotel lobbies, bus stops, shopping centers. Two years after I started I was playing The Palace and there was a lot of heavy breathing. I had no temper left and I was snapping at people, the way I always do when I am tired. So I just took off. I went to Paris.” (Charleston Gazette, January 16, 2016) Read More

Miss M’s Cultural Corner: The Sun King

2017-02-10_5-19-54

Bette Midler: “Since we are entering a despotic age, I am suggesting that you read The Sun King, Nancy Mitford’s highly entertaining, and enlightening look at the man Trump aspires to be.”

The Sun King is a dazzling double portrait of Louis XIV and Versailles, the opulent court from which he ruled. With characteristic élan, Nancy Mitford reconstructs the daily life of king and courtiers during France’s golden age, offering vivid sketches of the architects, artists, and gardeners responsible for the creation of the most magnificent palace Europe had yet seen. Mitford lays bare the complex and deadly intrigues in the stateroom and the no less high-stakes power struggles in the bedroom. At the center of it all is Louis XIV himself, the demanding, mercurial, but remarkably resilient sovereign who guided France through nearly three quarters of the Grand Siècle. Read More

Bette Midler On Her Paris Vacation:

Bette Midler On Her Paris Vacation: “It’s cutthroat there. If you don’t look just so, they don’t want you on their streets. One of the things I learned is, never go to France unescorted. And try to learn the language, at least the essentials. ‘How much?’ ‘Where’s the John?’ ‘Please don’t touch me.’” (Van Nuys Valley News, July 31, 1975)

BetteBack November 13, 1973: The very divine Bette Midler . . . knockin’ their sox off

The Daily Orange
November 13, 1973

2016-08-29_4-43-50

She made me stand in the cold for 90 minutes and I was nearly crushed by the frozen, frenzied crowd. She called me a guttersnipe. She called me trash. She told me to stand up. She told me to shut up and sit down.

She told us “Honey, they were hot for me in Potsdam and that’s the truth.” By the end of Friday night they were hot for Bette Midler in Ithaca, N.Y. And that’s the truth too. ‘

If you haven’t seen you couldn’t imagine. Sometimes the energy just escapes and her body goes berserk, the arms flailing, the legs charging across the stage in short, choppy, violent steps. Read More

I think that people should never stop working no matter how old they are. I think there should be no such thing as retirement…

“I think that people should never stop working no matter how old they are. I think there should be no such thing as retirement. Retirement is the pathway to an early grave. When you lose your work and what interests you, you lose your will to live, and I’m not that kind of person.”

Bette Midler: Bootleg Betty's photo.

BetteBack 1975: SUCCESS BRINGS ISOLATION

Van Nuys Valley News
‘Ugly’ Insults Sting Singer
July 31, 1975

Inside Bette Midler, who made her reputation as the brash, tough, bigger-than-life Divine Miss M, is “a vulnerable little person,” who is hurt by derogatory references to her appearance, the star revealed.

“I hate it when they call me ugly, when they say I’m homely,” the orange-haired entertainer told a reporter for the current issue of Redbook magazine, confiding that she has considered having a nose job. Read More

Gaultier “Waiting Period” Due To Movie Making

WWD
Front Row at Jean Paul Gaultier
July 4, 2012

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: They say that movie sets are 90 percent waiting and 10 percent actual filming. That’s certainly how it felt at the Jean Paul Gaultier couture show on Wednesday, which doubled as the backdrop for the latest comedy starring Valérie Lemercier — France’s answer to Tina Fey.

As the actress sat in character in the front row, flanked by costar Marina Foïs, a voice announced the show would start in 20 minutes — but by that time, it was already almost an hour past the scheduled start. (Gaultier officials insist it was a snafu in the atelier that delayed embroideries, not the movie making, that held up the show.) Read More
