BetteBack January 28, 2000: “Isn’t She Great,” played in steamroller-diva style by Bette Midler

Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN)
January 28, 2000 | Covert, Colin

isn-t-she-great-ist-sie-nicht-grossartig

Didn’t she grate? What the midi skirt was to fashion, what the Village People were to music, what Rod McKuen was to verse, Jacqueline Susann‘s trashy potboilers were to the American novel: inexplicable relics of the 1970s whose main entertainment value today is provoking a chuckle at garage sales.

Susann chronicled the lives of pill-popping, bed-hopping, scenery-gnawing actresses and models in such classics as “Valley of the Dolls,” “The Love Machine” and “Once is Not Enough.” Now she’s back as the heroine of a camp biopic, “Isn’t She Great,” played in steamroller-diva style by Bette Midler. The Divine Miss M: Deluxe,” Bette Midler (Rhino/Atlantic)

I know I’m not the only straight man in American who loves Bette Midler, but sometimes it seems like it. Midler’s musical ups and downs have been many in the past 40-plus years, but there has never been another singer quite like her.

When Midler’s debut album, “The Divine Miss M,” arrived in 1972, it was a welcome blast of nostalgia and musical bravado. Midler, whose most dedicated audiences at the time were the attendees of The Continental Baths, a gay bath house in New York City, was an irrepressible entertainer with a powerhouse voice and sense of history. She drew from swing, 1950s and ‘60s R&B and pop, she gave a breathy and emotional take of Leon Russell’s “Superstar,” which has since become a standard, and she even threw in a cover of John Prine’s folk tearjerker “Hello In There.” Read More

Entertainment Weekly Review: Beaches, A Lifetime Movie

Entertainment Weekly

The original 1988 Bette Midler/Barbara Hershey  film is one of the most beloved weepies of all time. So this remake comes with high expectations – that it sadly doesn’t meet.

CC (Idina Menzel) and Hillary (Nia Long) are lifelong friends who support each other through respective ups (careers) and downs (illness).

The update (set in SoCal instead of New Jersey) maintains the same beats as the original, but unfortunately Menzel doesn’t have the same comedic chops as Midler, and the film can feel a little flat. Read More

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling:

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling: “People want to make fun of people with money. Lily, the woman I play, is a movie star. These people are pretty rich. It’s fun to find the foibles of rich people. They are among the more ridiculous because they have things but still are just like everyone else.” (Herald-Journal, Apr 8, 1997)

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling:

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling: “I’ve got bills to pay and a family to feed, after all, and making movies is nothing to touring. I mean, this woman before you has been frazzled, at times. But who;s complaining? Work is work, but making this movie with Carl Reiner is like bustin’ free a little. Carl goes for the big laughs.” (Herald-Journal, Apr 8, 1997)

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling:

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling: “This movie fulfills my desire to do something broad. I like characters who are way over the top. She doesn’t hold anything back, And it’s nice to be back in high heels, too. This woman wears some nice threads. It’s the type movie I think is right for me to do right now.” (Herald-Journal, Apr 8, 1997)

BetteBack January 23, 1974: Divine Raunch

Fort Worth Daily Skiff
January 23, 1974

It is no news to most people that Bette Midler, the five-foot-high selfannounced queen of the truly tacky people, has come out with her second album. What may surprise those people who are not followers of the Divine Miss M though, is how fine this album really is.

Last year when Bette came to Dallas in concert, not many straights had heard about her. The audience looked at least 50 per cent gay and at least 35 per cent more camp. A person committed a definite faux pas if he arrived in jeans. Read More

Bette Midler On Experience The Divine:

Bette Midler On Experience The Divine: “We’ve had fabulous crowds and of course great food, which means everything. I like being out. I like traveling in the summer. We were in Kansas City, where we played in 110-degree heat. And we just missed the rainstorms in Georgia. But we’ve had a great time. I love touring this country. I think I’ve found my niche.” (Boston Globe, 1994)
