With the three-day Martin Luther King holiday weekend as a spur, the Broadway box office defied the January trend, pole-vaulting 27% over the same week in 2017 and even surpassing the previous week by 2%. All that despite some staggering nose-dives among the family-friendly crowd.

Wicked, at the Nederlanders’ Gershwin, was off $280K from the week before. Read More

Broadway Box Office: Outpacing Itself With ‘Hamilton,’ Springsteen, More
By Gordon Cox
DECEMBER 18, 2017 3:05PM PT

With a spate of mega-selling shows like “Hamilton,” “Hello, Dolly!” and “Springsteen on Broadway” now running, the Broadway box office is easily outpacing itself this year. Want proof? The season is is barely half over, and it’s already up to $918 million — more than $130 million more than the season-so-far tally at the same time last year.

The rapidly rising numbers make sense, as more and more shows are attracting the kind of ticket demand that drives consumers to shell out for big-money tickets. Last week alone, five shows topped the $2 million mark: “Hamilton” ($2,827,018), “Hello, Dolly!” ($2,448,611), “Springsteen on Broadway” ($2,401,108), “The Lion King” ($2,336,750) and “Wicked” ($2,000,828). Hello, Dolly!
Why it’s on our list: The ultimate musical theatre showstopper, “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.”
While leading lady Bette Midler was the definitive draw for this revival, the stand-out song for this Dolly, or any Dolly for that matter, isn’t “Before the Parade Passes By”—time and again it comes down to “Put On Your Sunday Clothes.” Jerry Herman’s score is a joyous concoction crafted simply to delight and enthrall audiences, and it kicks into high gear with this first act production number. At The Broadway B.O., Sales Rocket As Audience Lags In Sellers’ Market

The mere fact that there are enough plays on Broadway at the moment to require their own visual aid is remarkable all by itself. Read More
