The Top 10 Plays and Musicals of 2017

The Top 10 Plays and Musicals of 2017

The stupefying boredom of forgotten hamlet in the Israeli desert, where the residents are jolted out of their trance-like existence by a visiting band of Egyptian musicians. The inhabitants of a remote rocky island off the coast of Canada warmly embrace the passengers of 38 jets stranded there in the wake of 9/11. A working class bar in a failing factory town is the backdrop for a shocking act of violence and an equally dramatic reconciliation. In this most polarized of years, a number of the best productions celebrate man’s shared humanity and the possibility of even the most entrenched enemies finding common ground and a path forward. Egypt Today
Celebrating singer & actress Bette Midler
By: Nizar Ahmed Fri, Dec. 1, 2017

CAIRO – 1 December 2017: December 1 is the birthday of the enchanting singer and actress Bette Midler, whose Grammy-award winning music has sold nearly 30 million copies worldwide, while her film roles have earned her Oscar nominations.

Born in Hawaii on 1945, Midler grew up poor alongside three other siblings, and found joy in the nature around her. Midler studied drama at the University of Hawaii, and got her very first start in movies as an extra on 1965’s “Hawaii”. Soon after, she moved to New York City to get her start in show business, with her earliest stints being a singer at a nightclub. She also had a role on Broadway’s popular “Fiddler on the Roof”. BetteBack June 1975: Bette Midler – The New Taste

In The Know
Bette Midler: The New Taste
June 1975
James Spada

The curtain goes up in New York’s Minskoff Theatre, and the anticipatory audience sees a huge fishnet strung hammock like across the stage. Suddenly an equally large clam comes sliding down, settling into the middle of the net. It slowly opens and out pops Bette Midler, wrapped in a Dorothy Lamour sarong, to begin her latest act, the “Clams on the Half Shell Revue.”

The opening of Bette Midler’s newest triumphant theatre engagement is, unintentionally, more appropriate than camp. She’s been in her own personal shell for nearly 18 months, making no personal appearances, filming no TV shows, turning down major movie offers and Broadway shows and, most unsettling of all to her fans, not even planning a new album to follow her Golden biggies The Divine Miss M and Bette Midler. Bette Midler On Movies, Music, And Her Gay Fans

Mister D: Once again UK journalists outdo the US as far as interviewing. Great job!

Bette Midler Interview

We’re having a debate with Bette Midler about her music. She doesn’t believe us when we note the eight year gap between her last, Grammy nominated album, Cool Yule, and her new one, It’s The Girls, is far longer than the one between No Frills and Beaches.

As gay conversations go, correcting Bette Midler on her back catalogue is pretty much the daddy of all things gay. Read More

Bette Midler April 6, 1987: Bette Midler Goes To Writer Tama Janowitz For Movie Idea

Publication: Winnipeg Free Press
Issue Date: April 6, 1987

Writer Tama Janowitz caused a bit-of a stir In New York recently when the New York Times Magazine published her profile of Bette Midler. In Adventures in Tinseltown, Janowitz describes travelling to Hollywood to interview Midler, only to have the Divine Miss M offer her a development deal to write a script for a Midler idea.

In the article, Janowitz unabashedly agrees to think it over and maybe “take a meeting.” Writers aren’t supposed to get anywhere near that close to their subjects. Editor Edward Klein admits he was “a little bit” uncomfortable about the conflict of interest when the piece came in. But, he says, “It was all done tongue-incheek, with a sardonic quality. And since nothing came of it, I saw no problem. … My thought was, this was not a journalist on assignment, but a fiction writer (Janowitz wrote Slaves of New York) using her experience as part of her non-fiction report. I was very happy with the piece. I thought it was very amusing, a superb piece of work.” Read More

This is to categorize what kind of Bettehead you are, and to let you know if you are a big enough of a Bette Midler fan to dub you a bettehead, note: just because you’ve seen beaches and like from a distance, it doesn’t make you a bettehead.

Bette Midler Covers TLC’s ‘Waterfalls’

Bette Middler is paying tribute to some of the greatest harmonies performed by girl groups in music history with her upcoming collection of covers It’s the Girls.

The album, available November 4 from Warner Bros. records, features 15 classic tracks by legendary ladies including the Ronettes, the Supremes, TLC, and the Chiffons, among others.

“A long time ago I fell in love with voices in harmony,” Midler said in a press release. “In particular, the sound of female voices singing together. There were so many great girl groups in those days, I still listen as avidly as I ever did. This record is a small attempt to honor them for all the joy they brought to me and the world.” Read More

A source tells Confidenti@l that she was struck by the resemblance between Sophie von Haselberg, a young actress who plays a secretary in the comedy “Billy & Ray,” and Bette Midler, who was in the audience. At the intermission of the drama (about the making the movie “Double Indemnity”) our spy told the Divine Miss M, “that actress looks like a young you.” Midler’s response: “She’s my daughter.” Yale grad von Haselberg is making her Off-Broadway debut.
