Broadway Box Office: “Hello, Dolly!” Without Bette Midler Falls to Earth

by Jeremy Gerard
January 29, 2018 2:02pm

Broadway’s winter lull focuses all eyes on the slim pickings as long-runs host 2-for-1 sales, houses sit empty in anticipation of the spring semester and shows hustle to sustain momentum after stars have exited for the ski slopes or warmer climes.

Tony winner Ben Platt has left Dear Evan Hansen, but that musical, with Noah Galvin taking over in the title role, still is drawing a premium of nearly 20% above its gross potential at the Shubert Organization’s Music Box Theatre, with one of the highest per-ticket averages on the Street. Broadway offered something for everyone last week, as long as everyone was loaded with dough. Face-value ducats topped out at $1,150 for blockbuster Hamilton, but that was Monopoly money considering the going rate for fans of Bette Midler (nearing the spectacular end of her spectacular run in Hello, Dolly!) and Bruce Springsteen (whose work week is limited to five performances at the 948-seat Walter Kerr). HEY BETTE MIDLER, SARAH JESSICA PARKER & KATHY NAJIMY: PLEASE DO THE ‘HOCUS POCUS‘ SEQUEL
ALICIA LUTES @ALICIALUTES

On Wednesday afternoon the world was bowled over with the oh-so very exciting news that Tina Fey might produce the sequel to Hocus Pocus, everyone’s favorite witchy nineties movie. Now, if you’re a frequent reader of this here Bustle dot com, you know that we love us some Hocus Pocus. Like, a lot. And the prospect of the Bossypants Queen tackling one of our childhood favorites in sequel form obviously got us a bit excited (understatement). But we cannot, in good faith, endorse this film’s existence without the inclusion of the superstar trio at its heart: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. Read More
