Johnny Carson explained to Filmland friends Saturday evening. .”I’ve married three times because, as a concerned American . I’ve wanted to spread the wealth more evenly among the populace.”

And that was about the funniest line to come out of The Friars’ Club Charity Roast honoring “The King Who Rules Midnight.”

Perhaps never have so many comedians laid such a massive quantity of eggs as were hatched at the dais ol the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel Saturday evening. The head table consisted of a multimillion dollars worth of talent — including Lucille Ball, George Burns. Red Buttons., Buddy Hackett. Bob Hope. Alan King, Bette Midler. Jan Murray. Carroll O’Connor. Burt Reynolds and Don Rickles. yet by the end of the program even the professional comedians who are usually each other’s most appreciative audience’ had trouble not lookhig bored. Bette Midler On David Letterman Setting Her Up For Trouble With Network Brass: “You know, David Letterman, he’s a crafty little guy. He saw that I was vulnerable and he took me right by my nose and led me down the garden path. But it was good TV.” (Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service, January 9, 2001)

What can you tell me about Bette Midler? I think she is fantastic! H.C.

Bette’s personality has helped to get her songs right to the top of the charts. She is from Hawaii, which she savs is a wild place. While still there. Bette got some work as a movie extra. It paid S350 a week. The money helped convince her parents that maybe shoe business wasn’t such a bad business and Bette consequently flew to N.Y.

One day a talent coordinator for David Frost saw Bette and signed her for the Frost Show. The audience gave her quite a reception and Frost signed her to five more shows. Merv Griffin jumped on the bandwagon and so did Johnny Carson and Mike Douglas. She was on her way to fame! Read More
