BetteBack May 13, 1975: Bette Midler: Still divine

South Mississippi Sun
May 13, 1975

2016-06-12_9-04-42

NEW YORK (UPI) — So great has been the demand for tickets for the divine Bette Midler‘s show at the Minskoff Theater that her run has been extended from four weeks to 10 weeks, ending June 21. Small wonder. The mop-haired, raunchy-tongued, trashily dressed singer took a year out of her notably successful career as an entertainer and recording star to put together a revue called “Clams on the Half Shell.” It was well worth the effort, for this is the most bubbly, amusing entertainment in New York this side of “The Wiz.” Read More

BetteBack April 16, 1975: Clams On The Half Shell Opens

Bucks County Courier
April 16, 1975

BROADWAY WAS LIKE A carnival last night. Six to 7000 people pushing and shoving in just one block — wild, desrespectful and wonderful Bette Midler opening at the Minskoff, everlastingly beautiful Ingrid Bergman opening in “The Constant Wife” at the Shubert.

Bette’s cultists wore from Dracula outfits to white-tie-and-canes and gave her numerous ovations and a huge one to Lionel Hampton.

I’m partial to Bette’s talking.

Too bad about the Bicentennial: “All New York’s revolutionary landmarks are now gay bars” … “Jerry Minskoff built this theater so he can remember how to spell his name. It has the warmth of a Ramadalnn.” Read More

BetteBack June 1975: Bette Midler – The New Taste

In The Know
Bette Midler: The New Taste
June 1975
James Spada

The curtain goes up in New York’s Minskoff Theatre, and the anticipatory audience sees a huge fishnet strung hammock like across the stage. Suddenly an equally large clam comes sliding down, settling into the middle of the net. It slowly opens and out pops Bette Midler, wrapped in a Dorothy Lamour sarong, to begin her latest act, the “Clams on the Half Shell Revue.”

The opening of Bette Midler’s newest triumphant theatre engagement is, unintentionally, more appropriate than camp. She’s been in her own personal shell for nearly 18 months, making no personal appearances, filming no TV shows, turning down major movie offers and Broadway shows and, most unsettling of all to her fans, not even planning a new album to follow her Golden biggies The Divine Miss M and Bette Midler. Q: Didn’t Bette Midler drop out of sight for awhile ? Who got her back to work? — H.P., N.Y., N.Y.

A: Yes, she did drop out because she got scared. She felt her voice had lost its unique quality and she feared she might not get it back to its proper timbre. But her agents finally convinced Bette she had to end her year’s hiatus. So she started with that Cher guest spot on TV. is set to work again on Broadway and do a tour, plus a recent press conference and lots of publicity. Phil Greenwald, the Sol Hurok of the Catskills, is negotiating to bring the Divine Miss M. to the Concord Hotel. Read More

Bette Midler on how she used to hate singing: “It used to be torture. I am completely different. I like to sing now.

Bette Midler on how she used to hate singing: “It used to be torture. I am completely different. I like to sing now. I didn’t always used to. It used to be really, really hard. Absolute torture sometimes. I love everything about it now,” she says. “I enjoy learning the songs, and shaping them into a version, learning the harmonies. “Gypsy” was her emotional rescue. I kind of stretched my voice a little bit. I worked very hard, and it really opened a lot of doors in my singing voice that I hadn’t had before. Once I got hold of that process, that newer, stronger voice, it really excited me,” she says. Actually, that’s the reason I went on the road. I got this new technique and I was really anxious to see if it made a difference with the old music.” (1993, Hartford Courant) – Bette Midler Read More
