THE CRUSH of bridge chairs forms a circle surrounding a large grand piano which is being pounded into a soulful vamp. Thirteen black gospel singers begin bellowing “Gone at Last,” a new Paul Simon song written just for the occasion, and three of the sleasiest-looking girls this side of Eighth Avenue join them in harmony. As the song builds momentum, a red-haired Lilliputian in clashing purple dance tights and brown knee-high boots skitters across the circle segueing the song into a crisp arrangement of “Higher and Higher.” Arms flailing, body gyrating, she hits the top note and the number climaxes. Bette Midler was tweeting her despair over London’s latest terror attack when she accidentally set off a gender war.

The star wrote: “More sorrow and grief at the hands of madmen in London. Men and religion are worthless.”

While she very likely meant ‘men of religion’, that was not how many men took it, with plenty replying to set her straight on the value of men.

Bette Midler has never held back with her thoughts on Donald Trump’s presidency.

The funny lady has made plenty of criticisms of Trump’s policies and personality, and the billionaire leader has been no fan of hers in the past either, tweeting that she “sucked” when singing Wind Beneath My Winds at the 2014 Oscars.

But Midler has branched out a little in her latest tweet, taking a dig at Trump’s daughter Ivanka, who’s taken an office in the White House as an unpaid special adviser to her father, the president. The funny tweet got retweeted almost 3,000 times in just a few hours, as Midler’s followers wholeheartedly agreed with her sentiments. Read More

Bette Midler On Her Life’s Dream:

Bette Midler On Her Life’s Dream: “I don’t really mean to sound pompous, but I always did think that this is what my career would turn out to be. And it could have turned out much worse, so I’m grateful for the way it’s gone But this is what I imagined for myself. When people ask me, `What’ll I do?’ I say, `Dream your dream. Put it in your head, and go step by step.’ That’s what I did and it happened well for me.” (New York Daily News, 1997)

Bette Midler On The First Wive’s Club:

Bette Midler On The First Wive’s Club: “There are a lot of angry women out there, and they saw themselves in this comedy. It struck a note of recognition in their lives, in a humorous way. But I think it was more than that. It was also the fact that we were three women whose careers people had been following for years, who had all hit kind of rough patches, but had now finally gotten themselves a decent vehicle. Three phoenixes rising from the ashes; I think people were rooting for us and that had something to do with it, too.” (New York Daily News, 1997) Read More

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling:

Bette Midler On That Old Feeling: “Leslie Dixon wrote this for me. We both wanted to do something big and broad, and I’m thrilled with it. I love those kinds of characters, the fight scenes are great, the love scenes are great, and there’s a little bit of music in it and all this romance. It seems like the right thing at the right time, and I’m really proud of it.” (New York Daily News, 1997)

Bette Midler On Disappointment At Age 51: “When I was very young and (disappointment) happened to me for the first time, I got quite sick from it. But then I toughened up. It’s just part of the job. You have to get over it and get on with it.” (New York Daily News, 1997)

Yeah, She’s Problematic, but Let’s Stop Looks-Shaming Kellyanne Conway

At the risk of sounding like someone’s mother or that goody two-shoes who raises her hand to help the teacher out when the rest of the class is clearly in on an anti-question-answering conspiracy, I would like to say stop it—lay off Kellyanne*.

*not completely, just in this specific manner I will outline below

If you’ve been on the internet lately, you will have seen some memes equating the female figureheads of the Trump’s America to bananas in various stages of decay or miscellaneous cartoon demons. You might have seen the least offensive one (below), which refers to a comment you only make to a woman when you no longer have the will to live. Or maybe you’ve been following along as Nick Barose, major makeup artist and noted Conway opponent, evaluates his nemesis’ skincare habits. (Though he seems to be in on the joke, geo-tagging such content “Petty Island.”) Read More
