Book: The Improv: An Oral History of the Comedy Club that Revolutionized Stand-Up

    2017-09-13_3-21-35

It’s no joke to say that our world would be a lot less funny without Budd Friedman!

In 1963, thirty-year-old Friedman—who had recently quit his job as a Boston advertising executive and returned to his hometown of New York to become a theatrical producer—opened a coffee house for Broadway performers called the Improvisation. Hello Dolly! Holding Strong, But Takes Box Office Hit When Midler Misses A Matinee Performance

A steady mid-summer on Broadway overall reflects a decent, tourist-driven mean but not the roller-coaster ride some shows are on, especially those that are star-driven. Kinky Boots, in its fifth year at Jujamcyn Theatres’ Hirschfeld, has enjoyed a big shot in the arm from Brendon Urie on the marquee; the show was up $60K last week to $1.4 million thanks to the Panic! At The Disco frontman’s fan base. That was more than 15 per cent above the show’s gross potential, with an average ticket price of $126.49. Read More

John Heard, one of America’s greatest actors of the past half century, has died at age 72.

Heard was found in a hotel room in Palo Alto, California. He had recently undergone back surgery only last week and was staying at the hotel to recover.

Police do not consider the death suspicious. “I can confirm that our officers responded with the Fire Department to a hotel in our city yesterday on a report of a person in need of medical aid,” a police spokesman said. “The person was determined to be deceased. While still under investigation, the death is not considered suspicious at this time.” Read More

BetteBack January 19, 1975: What Happened After The Cher Special Taping?

    Lubbock Avalanche Journal
    January 19, 1975

When Cher Bono wrapped up taping her first CBS-TV special, she with her steady, David Geffen (and don’t let anyone tell you differently) took off with the likes of none other than her first show guests, Elton John (In kilts and ruffles and of course, with his famous white framed glasses), Bette Midler in drab, and Richard Chamberlain along with a party of “intimates” and entourage to such a port of entertainment as Studio One in West Hollywood. They all danced together and then caught impressionist Lynn Carter
on stage in the Back Lot. What made it amazing was that many of the people crowding the big place didn’t recognize the stars. The put down was when a few did, they were rather sneered at by the Divine Miss M (whom they all apparently adored) and ignored by EJ (Mr. Music Super Star). Happily most were charmed by Chamberlain’s shyness and won over by Cher’s smiles and David’s congeniality. Read More

My whole life had been spent waiting for an epiphany, a manifestation of God’s presence, the kind of transcendent, magical experience that lets you see your place in the big picture. And that is what I had with my first compost heap. – Bette Midler
