In TV, movies, and real life, women have been at the forefront of the year’s biggest stories — so this Halloween season, we’re looking at pop culture’s most wicked depiction of female power.

If you’re a horror-movie aficionado, you’ve seen more vampires, werewolves, zombies, and serial killers than you could shake a stick, stake, silver bullet, or arrest warrant at. Isn’t it high time that the witches of cinema also get the acclaim they deserve? A great witch movie is inherently compelling because it’s driven by a person — a woman, usually — who refuses to behave the way that society demands. What makes witch movies so fascinating as a collection, though, is their wide variety of tones and messages. Whether you’re into the fun-for-all-ages allure of Hocus Pocus or the blood-spewing charms of Black Sunday, somewhere out there is a pointy hat and broomstick that’ll fit you just right. Read More

Mark Shenton: Why is my theatre ticket so expensive? It’s the economics, stupid

Theatre is necessarily a minority activity: even in London’s five largest theatres – the London Coliseum, London Palladium, Royal Opera House, Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Dominion – just 2,358, 2,286, 2,256, 2,196 and 2,069 people will be able to watch each performance respectively.

Other commercial West End venues range in size from 432 seats (the Fortune) to 1,500 (the Adelphi), but many important London theatres are much smaller: the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs (90 seats), Donmar (251 seats) and Almeida (325 seats) are three of the most high-profile producing venues in London, while the influential and unfunded fringe theatre the Finborough has just 50 seats. On Experience The Divine Tour: “I haven’t been in the Bette Midler business for the past 10 years: I’ve been in the Touchstone film business, pretty much.”

On Experience The Divine Tour: “I haven’t been in the Bette Midler business for the past 10 years: I’ve been in the Touchstone film business, pretty much.” Midler’s contract with Disney’s Touchstone has two pictures to go. “They have their ideas. I’ve been good, I’ve done good work, I’ve had a lot of fun with them, but I’m looking forward to doing my own thing.” (1991, Washington Post) – Bette Midler

Broadway: “Hello, Dolly!” Crashes Again During Bette Midler’s Week Off, Falls Below $1 Million

It wasn’t such a great week on Broadway for “Hello, Dolly!” Bette Midler took the week off and grosses fell by 11 percent. The week’s take fell to $913K from $2.3 million the week before. Capacity was down 11 percent.

All this points to why the whole main cast is leaving when Midler goes on January 14th. The show is being re-budgeted to real world box office when Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber take over. It also shows that this has really been Bette Midler on Broadway and not just a Broadway musical. Read More

When? 1996

What’s it rated? PG

Where’s it available? DVDStreaming on Amazon and Hulu

When you think of a go-to pick-me-up movie, one filled with marital betrayal, vengeance, blackmail, and more shoulder pads than you can shake a stick at doesn’t seem to be a natural fit. Nonetheless, ever since I fished out The First Wives Club from a discount DVD bin as a tween, the movie has weirdly never failed to perk me up. I blame the underlying theme of feminism, comedic timing, and the weirdly charming use of the phrase “It’s the ’90s,” to justify everything from getting Botox to minimalism. Read More
