Once upon a time there lived a couple named Sonny and Cher.

Their names went together as well as salt and pepper, bacon and eggs or spareribs and sauerkraut.

Sonny and Cher were not your average couple. They did things most couples never do, such as recording hit songs and naming their daughter Chastity. Later, they had a hit television show.

More recently upon a time, Sonny ” and Cher decided “for better or worse” did not mean “till death us do part,” and they decided to divorce. Read More

BetteBack February 6, 1975: Critics Get A Preview Of The Cher Special

There is no question that when Sonny Bono started his “Sonny Comedy Hour” he missed Cher.

The absence of Cher was one of the real reasons for the show failing to make it through the season.

Not only did Sonny’s show lack writing, it lacked comedy.

Next Wednesday night, Cher will try it on her own. This show, a special designed to kick off her new series, came off much better than did Sonny’s solo venture in television.

It was the presence of Cher that made the old “Sonny and Cher Show” a success. The girl can wear clothes like a high fashion model. Read More

Last fall, Gavin Creel found himself back at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, teaching a course called The Process Project. “I forced students to live in the process,” Creel says in his dressing room at the Shubert Theatre, where he plays Cornelius in Hello, Dolly! “It’s an icky space: I’d tell students, ‘Forget about what your hands are doing, forget about hitting the high note. Let’s just talk about what you’re doing in this moment and just play.'” Read More

Freak Show Review: Worthwhile For It’s Main Actor

The “Freak Show” by Trudie Styler, which ran in the Generation 14plus series, is particularly worthwhile for its main actor Alex Lawther . The British talent should be kept in mind. In “Freakshow” he appears much more flamboyant than in his first lead role in “Departure”, where he noticed as a poem writing, timid teenager.

He plays Billy Bloom, a teenager who loves the big performance and likes to present himself as David Bowie, Lady Gaga, Marilyn Monroe or in fantasy bird costume fantasy costumes. He has inherited this tendency to drama and eccentricity from his mother ( Bette Midler in a parade role and her first small cinema appearance for five years). Read More

Here’s a look at what’s in store for 2017 in music, TV, movies and theater.

From the opening of the new Nassau Coliseum to the rebooted “Spider-Man” and “24” and Bette Midler’s much-anticipated starring role in “Hello, Dolly!” here’s a look at what’s in store for 2017 in music, TV, movies and theater.

(Credit: SHoP Architects)How much will the renovated Nassau Coliseum — now fully named Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum Presented by New York Community Bank — change the Long Island landscape when it reopens April 5? Well, it will bring Billy Joel, Stevie Nicks, The Pretenders, Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey to Uniondale. And that’s just the first week. Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Roger Waters and New Kids on the Block are already scheduled for the rest of the year, all part of a new booking arrangement with Barclays Center that bundles the venues together to help A-level artists route their tours through Long Island again. BetteBack Sept. 21, 1998: Bathhouse Betty Review

It’s not fair that the Diva Divine makes albums only as vacations from movies and motherhood, for her genius is as a singer-entertainer. Midler‘s vocal voltage and pristine song salesmanship are on display here in tunes by Leonard Cohen, Chuckii Booker, Carole King, Ben Folds–lots of fine folk. Her voice can ache with hard-won wisdom (on the first single, My One True Friend) or smile with the sweet clarity of her Honolulu youth (Gus Kahn‘s 1925 Ukulele Lady). Songs like Laughing Matters, I’m Beautiful and I’m Hip give the album the sassy intimacy of a pep talk from an old friend. But Midler is not aging; those pipes are still brass-bold and silk-smooth. At 52, Bette’s still best. Read More

Anna Kendrick: Why Bette Midler Is the ‘Wayne Gretzky of Double Threats

Anna Kendrick Admits to Being a Musical ‘Amateur’ and Why Bette Midler Is the ‘Wayne Gretzky of Double Threats’
By Jeff Weiss | February 20, 2015 11:33 AM ES

anna-kendrick-doublethreat-2015-billboard-2-650

Anna Kendrick will be the first to tell you she’s not really a musician; she just plays one on the big screen. Her humility belies the mezzo-soprano belt that drove the actress’ cover of “Cups” from Pitch Perfect, the 2012 hit movie about a cappella competitions, to No. 6 on the Hot 100. That success has helped anoint the 29-year-old this generation’s Julie Andrews — the go-to belle for every female musical lead, including in Pitch Perfect 2 (out May 15), The Last 5 Years and Into the Woods (both out now). Off-camera, she’s not far removed from her theatrical persona: the acerbic underdog, constantly downplaying her talents — on the musical side, at least: “It’s so striking that I am an amateur among pros.” Read More

New Management Talked Bette Out Of Retirement

NEW YORK (AP) ” The Divine Miss M is hitting the road next summer, but this time you might want to call her The Divinely Green Miss M.

Bette Midler’s plans for a 22-city North American tour to promote her new CD “It’s The Girls!” will take a page from a younger artist’s playbook and try to limit her carbon footprint by minimizing the show’s bells and whistles.

“I don’t want to travel with 40 trucks. I don’t want to travel with 90 people,” said the Grammy- and Tony-winner. “Bruno Mars is my hero. Bruno Mars has eight trucks. If I tour, that’s how I want to tour. I don’t want the confetti cannons.” Read More
