BetteBack June 30, 1975: People Magazine Interview Regarding “Clams”

People Magazine
Bette Midler Returns In Tacky Triumph
June 30, 1975
By Patricia Burstein

In a blue-and-white smock with red sandals coordinating her Bicentennial look, the star shimmied along New York’s 42nd Street on a recent afternoon. Some of the drifters and drunks recognized and swooped down on her, and she fluttered her fingers in self-defense. She slunk past a peep show window, then nipped into an alley. A second later her bright red head popped out – the hand clutching the throat is her own, in the classic strangulation bit of vaudeville. “I wouldn’t say I invented tack,” Bette Midler observed, nasally, “but I definitely brought it to its present high popularity.” Though meant as a self-effacing remark, it is true. Her virtual one-woman Broadway show this season has been the biggest hit by a solo artist since she herself last brightened the Great White Way in 1973. Read More

It’s a fact of life, like death and taxes, that theatre ticket prices are rising inexorably. And now they’ve breached the $1,000 mark on Broadway – no, not through touts or the resale market, but from the official box office.

Tickets for front-row seats at many performances between late November and mid-January for Hello, Dolly! – when Bette Midler leaves the show – have gone on sale online with prices that have been spiked to $998. Once compulsory booking fees are added, the total for that comes to $1,009. Read More

Mark Shenton: Why is my theatre ticket so expensive? It’s the economics, stupid

Mark Shenton: Why is my theatre ticket so expensive? It’s the economics, stupid

Theatre is necessarily a minority activity: even in London’s five largest theatres – the London Coliseum, London Palladium, Royal Opera House, Theatre Royal Drury Lane and the Dominion – just 2,358, 2,286, 2,256, 2,196 and 2,069 people will be able to watch each performance respectively.

Other commercial West End venues range in size from 432 seats (the Fortune) to 1,500 (the Adelphi), but many important London theatres are much smaller: the Royal Court’s Theatre Upstairs (90 seats), Donmar (251 seats) and Almeida (325 seats) are three of the most high-profile producing venues in London, while the influential and unfunded fringe theatre the Finborough has just 50 seats. Jake Gyllenhaal may have missed out on a chance to win a Tony Award for his performance in the recent revival of Stephen Sondheim’s masterpiece musical “Sunday in the Park With George” (the producers decided to withdraw the production from Tony consideration), but he will have a chance to add a Grammy Award to his mantle for his performance. The 2017 Broadway Cast Recording of the production received a digital release on Sept. 22, just eight days before the eligibility cut-off for the 2018 Grammys. Read More

The 2017 Tony Awards may be history, but most of this year’s nominated productions are still playing in New York City, and several of the winners are breaking records at the box office.

Better late than never, here are reviews of the eight musicals I saw during my annual pre-Tony’s trip to the Big Apple, where actors Bette Midler (‘Hello, Dolly!’) and Ben Platt (‘Dear Evan Hansen’) are the toast of the town. Read More

As the commercial says, years from now there will be those that saw Bette Midler in Hello Dolly! on Broadway and those that say they did. I am SO lucky to be one of those that will be able to say I saw her. What a night! What a production. The 1964 multi-Tony Award winning musical (synonymous with Carol Channing) was revived in 1975 with an all black cast starring Pearl Bailey and then Carol Channing returned to the staircase in 1995. But this 2017 production feels fresh and new – even though it’s an old-fashioned musical. It has already set records (before opening) with more than $40 million in advance ticket sales. And one of the biggest reasons for that is summed up in two words: Bette Midler. Read More

Bette Midler On Bigotry:

Bette Midler On bigotry: “I don’t like bigotry in any form. I don’t like gay men who are violently anti-straight, and I don’t like straight people who are violently anti-gay. Any kind of prejudice frightens me.” (Gay Today, 1970)

Bette Midler On Getting Rid Of Certain Songs And Characters In Her Act:

Bette Midler On Getting Rid Of Certain Songs And Characters In Her Act: “I was looking at a review of John Prine the other day and he’s singing the same songs that he sang when I first met him many years ago. I guess that’s basically what a career is…you have your great songs and your great characters and you do them. Â But for me, at least, I’d like to say goodnight to a couple of them. It’s the millennium, you know, the perfect time to let them have their last gasp of glory in the sun.” (Toledo Blade, Oct 8, 1999) Read More
