The hottest show on Broadway is sold out every single night. There is a thrilling standing ovation smack dab in the middle of the second act. And normal people are paying nearly $800 a pop to sit in the theater’s premium seats. But there’s no hip-hop here, folks. This musical’s first production was in 1964, and its marquee star is 71 years old.

She’s Bette Midler — the beloved maven of stage and screen — and the show is the extraordinary new revival of “Hello, Dolly!” Read More

As opening night nears for Broadway sensation “Hello, Dolly!,” Bette Midler has had a wild week in previews.

On Friday night, we hear, she had a coughing fit that stopped the show cold. But she ad-libbed her way out of it, as a co-star even brought her a cup of water and a lozenge onstage. She regained her composure and ended the scene by quipping, “Live theater, who can beat it?” before falling to the floor, bringing the house down and getting a standing ovation for her efforts. Exactly a week from today Bette Midler will open in Hello, Dolly! on Broadway. There are a few reasons why I think this is pretty much the best thing ever.

First, Bette Midler. As I’ve written in this space multiple times before, I have always loved Bette Midler. While other Jews worship at the altar of Streisand, I’m the one outside the synagogue with signs reading: “Have you ever seen The Rose?” and “Did you not cry at the end of Stella?” Read More

Caution: This posting contains spoilers.

Bette Midler has brought top notch pizzazz back to Broadway in the new Hello, Dolly!…now in previews.  A bigger-than-life performance in a lavish show is just what is needed at this time, and, by golly, this Dolly has it all.

The costumes are breathtakingly beautiful.  The sets are gorgeous…especially that Act II Harmonia Gardens red carpet stairway.  The scenic designer and the costume designer are one and the same person, Santo Loquasto.  Look for his name twice on Tony night. Read More

The first time I remember seeing Oliver & Company was when it was theatrically re-released in 1996 when I was four years old. I remember the TV commercials advertising the movie, seeing the VHS tapes for sale in the store, and I definitely remember the Burger King kids meal toys. But most of all I remember my love for this movie, its music, and it’s characters. Read More
