BetteBack January 19, 1975: What Happened After The Cher Special Taping?

Lubbock Avalanche Journal

When Cher Bono wrapped up taping her first CBS-TV special, she with her steady, David Geffen (and don’t let anyone tell you differently) took off with the likes of none other than her first show guests, Elton John (In kilts and ruffles and of course, with his famous white framed glasses), Bette Midler in drab, and Richard Chamberlain along with a party of “intimates” and entourage to such a port of entertainment as Studio One in West Hollywood. They all danced together and then caught impressionist Lynn Carter
on stage in the Back Lot. What made it amazing was that many of the people crowding the big place didn’t recognize the stars. The put down was when a few did, they were rather sneered at by the Divine Miss M (whom they all apparently adored) and ignored by EJ (Mr. Music Super Star). Happily most were charmed by Chamberlain’s shyness and won over by Cher’s smiles and David’s congeniality. Read More

It’s been ten years since I lived here in LA

“It’s been ten years since I lived here in LA, and I have to tell you something. From the bottom of my heart, I’ve really missed you assholes. You superficial assholes!” (Bette Midler thanks the audience at the close of her triumphant return to Los Angeles in her hit show Kiss My Brass, March 2004)

Mark Rydell On Bette In The Rose:

Mark Rydell On Bette In The Rose: “Bette’s performance is shattering. She has a very raw sense of the truth. This film is savage. The music is severe. And the look is brutal,” (Plain Dealer, September 17, 1978)

Q: What’s this about Bette Midler making her film debut as the Virgin Mary?

A: lt’s a three-year old, jazzed-up home-movie spoof titled “The Divine Mr. J” that emerged from the can only when the Divine Miss M emerged from obscurity. “We turned down a Mike Nichols film, for Heaven’s sake,” says her manager. “Now this piece of (vulgarity deleted) comes out.”

New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom wasn’t big enough for dueling divas Bette Midler and Cher on Friday night.

The Divine Miss M dissed a tardy, lip synching Cher as “someone who used to be famous, ” according to witnesses at the Miracle On 34th Street concert.

The latest flare up between the two superstars was sparked by Cher, who, due to sing first, appeared a half hour late. Apparently she had been getting her face retooled by make up artist Kevin Acoin, but Midler’s camp suspected her dramatic entrance was deliberate. Read More

BetteBack May 23, 1973: Bette Midler Brings Back Nostalgia

Boone News Republican

Thinking along the lines of the nostalgia generated by the moving of the Queen and the display of Eva’s limo, we’re reminded of one of the hottest pop singers on the current scene –Bette Midler

“The Divine Miss M“. as she is referred to in the title of her first album, specialises in period songs from the days of the big bands, of swing and jazz.

Right now her version of “The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B” is being played by nearly every contemporary music station in the country. Read More

BetteBack February 18, 1973: Wrinkled Records

Winona Daily News
February 18, 1973

7-1-2012 6-30-19 PM

There Is an oldies boom in progress. Songs, singers and styles echoing an earlier time in music are becoming a minor phenomenon of the season. Think about It: Johnny Rivers has a hit single! Not only is Rivers an anachronism, but so is the song, “Rockln’ Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu”. In 1973? It doesn’t end there.

Elton John’sCrocodile Rock” is an ebullient call to the Miles: “I remember when rock was young/me and Susie had so much fun.” And then: “But the years went by and rock just died/Susie went and left me for some other guy/long nights cryln’ by the record machine/dreamln’ of my Chevy and my old blue jeans.” The cover shows a young couple going Into a movie house. He’s wearing jeans, sneakers, leather jacket, and greasy D.A. His date In flats, pony tail, gathered ankle length skirt and pink sweater. And parked at the curb, a chrome-soaked Plymouth. The Marquee Flashing “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player” starring Elton John. Read More

BetteBack February 11, 1974: As the World Rocks . . .

Albuquerque Journal
As the World Rocks . . .
February 11, 1974

Rock music is a uniquely American contribution to the world. Its roots can be traced all the way back to the Negro spiritual, sung by slaves in North America in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. The spirituals evolved into the blues, from which came rock.

IT WAS A former country-western singer, Bill Haley, who unwittingly started rock’s wide popularity.

His hit, “Rock Around the Clock,” which was a watereddown imitation of the black rhythm and blues style, became a world-wide hit in 1955. Read More

BetteBack December 23, 1973: Bette Midler, Elton John Top Sellers At Christmas Time In NY

Albuquerque Journal

A QUICK survey of the three record shops in the university area revealed that sales had gone up since Thanksgiving, with new albums by Elton John, the Pointer Sisters and Bette Midler being the fastest sellers. Both Bette Midler and the Pointer Sisters have recently performed at UNM’s Pope joy Hall, which Miss Grimes said was ‘‘probably the reason for their popularity”

A customer in the store, Kevin Heney, a UNM senior from Scarsdale, N.Y., said “I usually don’t buy records very often, but I’ve got three brothers and a sister who all like music. Read More

BetteBack December 11, 1973: Gosh, it’s Little Orphan Annie! Just when we need her!

New York Times
December 11, 1973

Bette Midler. "It was a remarkable adventure to return to Hawaii," Bette Midler said on the Tonight Show. The Johnny Carson program featuring Miss Midler performing a medley of songs from the 1940s and talking about her career will be shown on KHON, Channel 2, at 10:30 p.m., tomorrow. Star-Bulletin photo by Bob Young on September 6, 1973. Ran on Tuesday, September 18, 1973 and Sunday, August 21, 1977.

The nation was in sore need of comic relief last week.

And, against a background of gloom-on-gloom, with the house lights dimmed across the land, it got it.

Bette Midler opened at The Palace.

Flashy, trashy, and with enough warmth and energy to get the whole country through the winter, The Divine Miss M wowed ’em.

And the audience that responded to her with cheers, with laughter, with joy – was one that actually did represent the whole country:

“Straight and gay; aboveground and underground; unisex and duo-sex; Middle American and radic-lib; chic and frumpy; escapees from apartments for singles and escapees from retirement homes – they all turned out for the one performer on today’s scene they could all share with equal enthusiasm.” Read More
