Bette Midler in Hello Dolly! It is almost comedic how powerful Bette Midler’s box office presence is in the currently running revival of Hello, Dolly! Last week, Donna Murphy stepped in for her for the whole week, and the box office took a plunge. This past week, Bette was back for her usual 7 performances (with Donna Murphy still playing the eighth on Tuesday evening), and the weekly gross was $2,352,792, which represents 128.6% of the show’s gross potential. This is an increase from last week of $1,473,423, when Donna Murphy was in the role. With a top ticket price of $748.00, the average paid admission was $210.26, and the audience was filled up to 96.7% of capacity. The excitement over seeing Bette in person is even greater than ever, as she is nearing the end of her run on January 14, 2018. At that point, Bernadette Peters will replace her, and David Hyde Pierce will also end his tenure, to be replaced by Victor Garber. With Bette Midler back in her part, Hello, Dolly! was the third highest performing show this past week, following only Hamilton, with a weekly gross of $3,143,107, and Springsteen on Broadway, with a weekly gross of $2,395,570. In terms of gross potential, however, Hello, Dolly! was at number one at 128.6%. Performing not quite as well was Dear Evan Hansen, which brought in a weekly gross of $1,680,818, or 122.0%, followed by Hamilton at 108.6% of its gross potential. Read More

Midler on playing characters: “Those kinds of characters that are larger than life — driven, overbearing — those kinds of characters don’t come along very often.

Midler on playing characters: “Those kinds of characters that are larger than life — driven, overbearing — those kinds of characters don’t come along very often. Even in the theater. And since good parts are at a premium, I’m no fool — I want to play as many of them as I possibly can. Every actress who calls herself an actress wants in her heart to play Lady Macbeth. And every musical-comedy person wants to play Mama Rose.” (1993, Hartford Courant)

It wasn’t such a great week on Broadway for “Hello, Dolly!” Bette Midler took the week off and grosses fell by 11 percent. The week’s take fell to $913K from $2.3 million the week before. Capacity was down 11 percent.

All this points to why the whole main cast is leaving when Midler goes on January 14th. The show is being re-budgeted to real world box office when Bernadette Peters and Victor Garber take over. It also shows that this has really been Bette Midler on Broadway and not just a Broadway musical. Read More

Grease was the word. Now the word is “live.”

In an age when more and more viewers are binge-viewing, streaming and watching on demand, American broadcasters are fighting back with as much live event television as they can muster. More is on their way, with Fox mounting a two-hour production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show for fall (with Tim Curry narrating) and NBC bringingHairspray back as its next live holiday extravaganza.

Here are some recent Broadway to TV musical milestones: Read More

POP MUSIC REVIEW : A Rage to Live : Benefit: Bette Midler and friends lead a Hollywood charge against AIDS at a fund-raiser at Universal Amphitheatre.

LOS ANGELES — The star-studded “Commitment to Life V” benefit Sunday at the Universal Amphitheatre didn’t unveil any new pop anthems for the AIDS era. The leitmotif of the evening’s musical entertainment, though, was nonetheless related to the crisis–the recurring element being old, quasi-inspirational standards or show tunes that, in context, were made to seem positively prescient.
