Another week, another shattered record left in Bette Midler’s wake. Yawn.

The Tony winner propelled Hello, Dolly! to a new high for the Shubert Theater, grossing $2.37 million. Don’t get me wrong: I’m grateful for the traffic, but coming up with new ways to say how great Ms. Midler is each week becoming an exercise in seriously creative syntax malleability. She’s back where she belongs – who else is arriving? Read More

The Boss made his Broadway debut this week – and shattered multiple industry records in the process.

With just five performances of his concert show Springsteen On Broadway, he grossed a staggering $2.33 million, behind only Hamilton and Hello, Dolly! – which were playing full 8-performance schedules. It’s the most any show has grossed at the Walter Kerr theater, and a great feather in the cap for Jujamcyn, which owns the venue. Read More

Broadway is breaking another price barrier.

Producers of “Hello, Dolly!” are now charging $998 for front row seats at many performances between late November and mid-January, when Bette Midler leaves the cast, according to a review of ticket prices on the Telecharge website. With fees, each of those seats will cost $1,009.

The price is a record for a non-holiday performance on Broadway. “Hamilton” is the only show that has reached that level before, charging $998 for some seats during the Thanksgiving and Christmas weeks last year. Read More

Harvey Weinstein Is the (Whispered) Talk of Hollywood

The New York Times
Harvey Weinstein Is the (Whispered) Talk of Hollywood
By BROOKS BARNES
OCT. 8, 2017

Hollywood is usually a spotlight-seeking town. But there has been mostly public silence in the wake of a report that found that at least eight settlements had been paid to women who said the film producer Harvey Weinstein sexually harassed them. CreditChad Ress for The New York Times

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — Movie potentates were peppered across the Tower Bar here as usual on Friday night. Over in one dimly lit corner sat a martini-drinking movie star and his manager. And the restaurant’s lively owner, Jeff Klein, worked the room as he normally does, pausing to schmooze here and shake an important hand there.

At each banquette, as starlets of yesteryear gazed from their photographs on the walnut walls, he found himself in the same discussion. “All night long,” Mr. Klein said, “it seemed like there was only one topic: Harvey Weinstein. It’s all anyone wanted to talk about.” Read More

The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) returns for its annual New York Fall Gala on November 7 at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine with host Neil Patrick Harris.

The gala — which celebrates the foundation’s 25th anniversary this year — will pay tribute to founder Elton John and his contributions to his foundation and beyond. “Elton’s philanthropic endeavors and activism for human rights and the arts have inspired millions and made a positive difference in people’s lives around the world,” said EJAF Chairman David Furnish in a press release about the event. “But without a doubt, Elton’s greatest contribution as a humanitarian is his 25-year commitment to building one of the most important institutions in the effort to end AIDS – the Elton John AIDS Foundation.” Read More

BetteBack October 20, 1974: Rex Reed On Bette Midler

Independent Press Telegram
October 20, 1974

Rex Reed has had his share of difficult and embarrasing interviews. Some he has detailed in his newest book, People Are Crazy Here (Delacorte Press, $7.95). His most hostile subject was George Sanders. “Imagine being called to interview someone who doesn’t want to be interviewed, who hates you for infringing on his time and who is lying in bed fully clothed in a suit, threatening you the whole time with a cane!” Then there was Bette Midler, whom Rex would just as soon forget. “She sat on the toilet while I interviewed her. I tried to act big about the whole thing, look away and say, ‘Now, my next question is . .. ‘ Read More
