By Sean Burns
January 14, 2018

Can the revival of Hello, Dolly! survive the departure of its signature star? Bette Midler took her final bow at the Schubert Theatre on Sunday evening, as did co-stars David Hyde Pierce and Taylor Trensch. Bernadette Peters will take over the title role when the production resumes on January 20, with Victor Garber taking over for Hyde Pierce as Horaze Vandergelder and Charlie Stemp replacing Trensch as Barnaby Tucker. By Lisa L. Colangelo and Alison Fox

Broadway isn’t just for tourists anymore.

New York City residents are returning to the Great White Way in numbers not seen in almost 20 years, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Broadway League.

The annual demographics survey showed city residents made up about 2.85 million admissions to Broadway shows in 2016-17 — or 22 percent of the annual 13.3 million admissions. Read More

The Year When Bette Stormed Broadway, and Trump ‘Died’ in Central Park: NYC Theater in 2017

The Year When Bette Stormed Broadway, and Trump ‘Died’ in Central Park: NYC Theater in 2017
TIM TEEMAN

The best NYC theater of 2017 spanned Bette Midler in ‘Hello Dolly,’ Jake Gyllenhaal in Sondheim, and Tony Kushner telling The Daily Beast he was planning a play about Donald Trump.

It is rare for theater to make the news.

CBS may give one Sunday a year over to the Tony Awards (and here is what won what this year), but these celebrate the best of Broadway; theater made as safe and glittery as possible. Any edge is left to the winners’ speeches and hosts’ japing. Read More

Mark Shenton’s week: Bette Midler, Amy Schumer and Uma Thurman show that stars still shine on Broadway

Mark Shenton’s week: Bette Midler, Amy Schumer and Uma Thurman show that stars still shine on Broadway
by Mark Shenton – Dec 4, 2017

Broadway has always been a place where the name on the marquee is a prime seller. It’s what is propelling Bette Midler’s current return to the Broadway boards, for the first time in a musical role rather than as herself in nearly 50 years, to record box office takings in Hello, Dolly!. It opened to the largest pre-performance advance sale in Broadway history, and week after week it has been breaking the Shubert Theatre’s house record for its weekly take. The week ending November 26 brought takings of $2,468,174.59, breaking its own record for the 10th time. Read More

New Yoek Times
Top-dollar theatre boom on Broadway is born in the USA

Nobody does it better than Bruce Springsteen when it comes to poeticising the life of America’s working class. Fans have to dig deep to see his new Broadway show, though, given that the average ticket costs $500.

And that’s if they managed to buy one before Springsteen on Broadway sold out. The show’s short run and the limited seating at the Walter Kerr Theatre meant that tickets went quickly — and the few available through resale websites command as much as $10,000. Read More

At The Broadway B.O., Sales Rocket As Audience Lags In Sellers’ Market

Deadline Hollywood
At The Broadway B.O., Sales Rocket As Audience Lags In Sellers’ Market
by Jeremy Gerard
November 13, 2017 3:40pm

For the moment, the pre-holiday season looks swell, especially with Uma Thurman (in Beau Willimon’s The Parisian Woman) and Amy Schumer (in Steve Martin’s Meteor Shower) joining Bette Midler and Bruce Springsteen on the gold-paved Street where we live. So good, in fact, that this week we’re going to give you twoTop 5 charts, one for musicals and one for non-musicals. The mere fact that there are enough plays on Broadway at the moment to require their own visual aid is remarkable all by itself. Read More

Has Broadway Become Reliant on Celebrity Draw at the Box Office?

Has Broadway Become Reliant on Celebrity Draw at the Box Office?
November 9, 2017
By Katie Gainer

This week in Broadway news is dominated by reports of “splashy debuts” for singer-songwriter Jason Mraz and comedian-actress Amy Schumer in Waitress and Meteor Shower, respectively. The big stage first-timers brought in huge sales; on the other foot, we’ve seen a trend in shows faltering when its a big name exits a cast. This strong correlation in successes begs the question: is Broadway becoming reliant on celebrity? Read More

Bette Midler On Being Compared To Barbra Streisand:

Bette Midler On Being Compared To Barbra Streisand: “First of all, it makes me feel bad for her. I know I’d feel badly if I were Barbra, because everyone likes to think that they’re unique. I also know that no one feels like they’re tugging at someone else’s coattails, pushing against them on a ladder. It can be very irritating.” (Morning Star, August 23, 1977)

Bette Midler On Being Compared To Mae West:

Bette Midler On Being Compared To Mae West: “I got a lot of inspiration from Mae West. When I first started working, a friend brought one of her records over. Through it all, Mae West was a source of pleasure. I love her, She was quite marvelous. She was also quite independent, which I liked. So the first time I worked on television I did one of her songs. I’ve also been compared to Barbra Streisand. That’s flattering, although I don’t see the comparison myself. (Springfield Union, September 1, 1976) Read More

Singer Bette Midler seems to be making enemies at a fast clip these days.

Last year she ridiculed Cher, who was experiencing the biggest hit of her career.

Then Midler closed the year with some jabs at fellow diva Barbra Streisand during her New Year’s Eve show in Vegas. She had a Streisand impersonator saunter onto the stage near midnight. Acting stunned, Midler queried, “Barbra, what are you doing here?”

The Streisand look-alike responded, “I wanted to be with my husband at midnight.” Read More
