With the Tony Awards coming on Sunday night, I decided this week that I’d better bite the bullet and buy tickets to “Hello, Dolly!” in case Bette Midler wins best actress and tickets become even more scarce and expensive.

I knew the tickets would be steep. Thanks to what’s known as dynamic pricing, in which costs shift constantly to match demand, top ticket prices for hit shows on Broadway have hit previously unheard-of levels. Annual Broadway ticket sales reached a record $1.45 billion for the just-ended season. Read More

For the Broadway community, the annual Tony Awards is a well-deserved night off from the bright lights of the Great White Way. After leaving Radio City Music Hall, where the ceremony was held Sunday evening, many found themselves taking over the Carlyle for Rick Miramontez and DKC/O&M’s private after after-party, which has become something of an institution on the postshow event circuit. This time around, the legendary Upper East Side hotel hangout was transformed into “Disco Dolly!”—a nod, of course, to Hello, Dolly! starring Bette Midler. Tony-nominated lighting designer Natasha Katz was brought in to ensure the lighting matched the show’s signature red glow. Though it didn’t hurt that Ms. Midler herself also made an appearance. The 71st annual Tony Awards is now in the history books and once again it proved to be one of the best productions on television. But, as always, I’m always able to find a couple of flaws in the presentation and what kind of writer would I be if I didn’t point out what worked and what didn’t work? That’s a rhetorical question, so don’t answer it. Regardless, below are the good, bad and ugly of this year’s Tony telecast. Read More

Bette Midler Accepting Her 2017 Tony For Best Actress:

Bette Midler Accepting Her 2017 Tony For Best Actress: “I hope I don’t cry,” Midler said, before proceeding to give a sharp-witted speech toward the end of the 71st Annual Tony Awards in New York Sunday night. “This has been one of the greatest professional experiences of my entire life… I’m so grateful for the outpouring of love, it has been absolutely extraordinary. That said, I can’t remember the last time I had more smoke blown up my ass, but there’s no more room. This is the cherry on the cake…This has given me the ride of my life.” (Tony Awards, 2017) Read More

The Tony Awards on Sunday will celebrate the Great White Way.

But there’s also bound to be streaks of Orange.

There are simply too many close ties (one degree of separation, in some instances) to Donald Trump to ignore.

The host of the CBS telecast airing from Radio City Music Hall is Kevin Spacey, who plays an evil President on Netflix on “House of Cards.” That’s a joke setup waiting in the wings. Read More

Last fall, Gavin Creel found himself back at his alma mater, the University of Michigan, teaching a course called The Process Project. “I forced students to live in the process,” Creel says in his dressing room at the Shubert Theatre, where he plays Cornelius in Hello, Dolly! “It’s an icky space: I’d tell students, ‘Forget about what your hands are doing, forget about hitting the high note. Let’s just talk about what you’re doing in this moment and just play.'” Read More

Bette Midler may not be singing on this year’s Tony Awards but she will be among those presenting prizes at the 71st annual edition of these top theater honors on June 11. She is also in contention for her star turn in the revival of “Hello, Dolly!” Two of the Best Actor (Musical) nominees — Ben Platt (“Dear Evan Hansen”) and Josh Groban (“Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” — are also slated to appear on the kudocast. Readers Respond: Will Bette Midler Perform on the Tony Awards?

BroadwayWorld asked our readers for opinions on the news that Bette Midler may not perform on the Tonys due to a production dispute between HELLO, DOLLY! and The Tony Awards producers.

The New York Times reports that the production wants to perform the show’s famous title number, by remote from its theatre … an idea that’s happened in the past, but CBS has turned down, not wanting to start a new precedent. Read More
