Book: The Improv: An Oral History of the Comedy Club that Revolutionized Stand-Up

2017-09-13_3-21-35

It’s no joke to say that our world would be a lot less funny without Budd Friedman!

In 1963, thirty-year-old Friedman—who had recently quit his job as a Boston advertising executive and returned to his hometown of New York to become a theatrical producer—opened a coffee house for Broadway performers called the Improvisation. His goal? Simply to make a living, and if all went according to plan, to also make enough professional contacts to be able to mount his first Broadway show within a year’s time. Read More

“Life Moves Pretty Fast: The Lessons We Learned From Eighties Movies” by Hadley Freeman, Simon and Schuster, 339 pages, $16 paperback original.

Let’s start with “Steel Magnolias.” What is widely known now as as the Bechdel Movie Test for well-represented women in movies, came from cartoonist Allison Bechdel whose formulation was: A movie “has to have at least two women in it. 2) Who talk to each other. 3) About something besides a man.” U. K. Guardian columnist Freeman formulates the “Magnolia Test” to determine “whether or not a movie is a proper women’s movie: 1) The cast is largely, maybe even solely, female. 2) The female characters talk to each other about a million things other than men and genuinely like each other .3) And the relationship between the women is far more important than any they have with a man. 4) Bonus points if any of the following are in the film: Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler, Olympia Dukakis. Triple for Sally Field.” Read More

[Our father] didn’t like us wearing make up and we had a curfew some ridiculous hour like ten o’clock, and if you weren’t in the house you usually got locked out.

“[Our father] didn’t like us wearing make up and we had a curfew some ridiculous hour like ten o’clock, and if you weren’t in the house you usually got locked out. Us sisters were always sticking up for each other and always sneaking each other in the window at night.”

Sarah Jessica Parker: I learned an enormous amount about physical comedy from Steve Martin (LA Story) that’s been a huge part of everything I’ve done since.

I learned a great deal about professionalism and discipline and working hard from Bette Midler. I’ve worked with her three times now.

And I learned about commitment and passion from Nick Cage.

BetteBack April 4, 1997: New York Daily News – That Old Feeling

New York Daily News
Byline: Bob Strauss
April 4, 1997

That Old Feeling” is uncontrolled, inconsiderate lust. Refreshingly so, in this often funny, sometimes stumbling farce. With Bette Midler blasting away at her larger-than-life best and supporting players who aren’t afraid to look like fools, the movie surfs over credulity gaps and structural bumps on waves of raucous laughter.

Leslie Dixon, who wrote Midler’s similarly amusing “Outrageous Fortune,” came up with the ultimate adult child’s nightmare here. Two divorced parents, individually embarrassing but utterly mortifying when they get together and start fighting, ruin your wedding – not with an argument (though they do that, too), but with a suddenly rekindled passion for each other. (When you were growing up, did you ever steal anything?) “I had no money. I had absolutely nothing. I got a quarter a week for allowance. What are you going to do with a quarter a week?

(When you were growing up, did you ever steal anything?) “I had no money. I had absolutely nothing. I got a quarter a week for allowance. What are you going to do with a quarter a week? So, my girlfriend said, “This is what I do.” So I said I’d do it with her. But I didn’t really like it. It was too terrifying. It hurt my nerves. I stopped, and I’ve never stolen anything since. I would never, ever think of it. After my girlfriend and I took this makeup–lipsticks and hair dye–from the mall, we were on our way home with our little bags. It was pouring rain, we were in the middle of a hurricane, and my girlfriend and I got down on our knees and said, “God, if you don’t kill us in this hurricane we swear we will never do this again.” We didn’t die, and we never did it again. I keep my vows.” (1991, Movieline) Read More

BetteBack September 6, 1991: Geraldo Tastelessly Bares His Sex Life

Madison Wisconsin State Journal
September 6, 1991

r-BETTE-MIDLER-GERALDO-large570

A middle-aged man brags about his sexual conquests … live, on the next Geraldo!

What? The man IS Geraldo?

That’s right — the syndicated talk show host has penned his autobiography, replete with tales of threesomes in an ABC-TV boiler room
and celebrity interviews that ended with Rivera bedding the interviewee.

Like this encounter with Bette Midler: “We were in the bathroom, preparing for the interview, and at some point I put my hands on her
breasts. She loved it, and we fell into a passionate embrace.” Read More
