There is no question that when Sonny Bono started his “Sonny Comedy Hour” he missed Cher.

Seven members of singer Bette Midler‘s touring company made it to her concert tour Sunday night after being released on bail following their arrests on charges of possessing cocaine and marijuana.

Police arrested the men, members of the singer’s band and technical crew, at their motel after officers observed the group through a window.

One of the arresting officers said the men closed the drapes on the motel room after spotting them.

For Bette Midler fans, don’t get too excited when you see the hype for a new movie, “The Divine Mr. J.”

The publicity people would have us believe it’s a new movie starring the Divine Miss M as the Virgin Mary in a religious Satire. Truth of the matter is the film was made three years ago in Detroit and Bette’s part is a bit .,. .

BetteBack December 23, 1973: Bette Midler makes for good all around listening

Hattiesburg American

Bette Midler‘s flexible and interestingly toned voice would alone have been sufficient to propel her to popularity, but the “divine Miss M” reaches the masses with another device — the use of tasteful music that has an appeal to all, regardless of which side the generation gap you may falL Her music is not new or in any way innovative.

Rather, it seeks to entertain with its own unique character, a slightly tongue-in-cheek aura of nostalgia for the glamour of the female singing stars of the 40’s and the 50’s. Read More

BetteBack December 14, 1973: Bette Midler’s Second Album As Good As The First

Daily Review
December 14, 1973

BETTE MIDLER – By Rette Midler on Atlantic.

Bette’s first album was a once-in-a-lifetime shot where she brought back some oldies as only she could. Her recent effort is just as good, with a little more background than before, which is just what the Divine Miss M needed to keep her !940s style up.

The album was produced excellently by Arif Mardin and Barry Manilow. Some of the tunes on the record are “Skylark,” “Drinking Again.” “In The Mood” and “Uptown—Da Doo Run Run. Read More

Q: My mother tells me that “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” by Bette Midler was popular some time back. Could you tell me who made it popular? — Hortensia G., South Gate, Cal.

A: Bette, who considers herself a 50s freak,” dipped into the ’40s for this song which was introduced and made popular by the Andrews Sisters, a group of three who were actually sisters.

Concert Review: Bette Midler is bigger than any song. She is the full show! (Leeds) Read More

BetteBack September 13, 1998: What’s Bette Midler Doing Next After Murphy Brown Cameo?

Hutchinson News

Q: Bette Midler was hilarious as Candace Bergen‘s last secretary in the season finale of Murphy Brown. But frankly, I’d rather have a new Bette album.

A: Wait no more, Bette Midler’s newest CD, Bathhouse Betty, her first in three years, hits stores this month.  It includes the title song from Meryl Streep‘s new movie, One True Thing.

You aren’t alone in noticing Midler’s campy turn on Murphy Brown. ABC tried to lure her into a sitcom deal.  Nothing came of it for this season; however, Midler may make some kind of deal with Carsey-Werner known for developing comedies around strong women. Read More

BetteBack October 9, 1973: Midler is one of the most powerful singers around

Houston Daily Cougar
October 9, 1973

“ All the freaks in one place, Bette Midler nodded approvingly at the crowd gathered for her concert Sunday night in Hofheinz Pavilion.

Every Looney Tune in Houston must be here. With no opening act threatening to steal her thunder on the stage, Midler still had to contend with the scene-stealing of the very audience that assembled to pay her homage. The daintily embroidered blue jean jackets, the rhinestones, the glitter and the bare midriff dresses (on men) all stood ready to challenge the Star lierself for attention. The more flamboyant and outrageous members of the audience received a warm round of applause as they made their way to their seats before the lights went down for the Divine Miss M, as she prefers to be called.
