1. The celebrated Bay Area string ensemble Kronos Quartet has made some kick-ass collaborations with other musical artists over the years, but their new album “Ladilikan,” a creation with the Malian group Trio Da Kali, is certainly one of their best.

Da Kali is a trio that brings contemporary edge to traditional Malian music, blending a balafon (xylophone), a bass ngoni (flute) and a vocalist. The Kronos, consisting of violinists David Harrington and John Sherba, violist Hank Dutt and cellist Sunny Yang , are no strangers to world music. Da Kali singer Hawa Diabate is the daughter of Mali’s great traditional singer Kasse Mady Diabate . Kronos leader Harrington compares her voice to that of the late American gospel legend Mahalia Jackson . Composer Jacob Garchik , son of SF Chronicle columnist Leah Garchik, arranged Trio Da Kali’s repertoire for string quartet. Read More

Bette Midler On Trying Too Much To Carry The Bette TV Series:

Bette Midler On Trying Too Much To Carry The Bette TV Series: “It was like doing a little Broadway show every week. I had no idea it was going to be that hard The first four or five episodes I was sick to my stomach. It was absolutely horrifying. We need more and funnier characters. And I think that’s what we’re going to go for.” (Knight Ridder/Tribune News Service, January 9, 2001)

Battling Bots for Tickets to Bette Midler’s ‘Hello, Dolly!’

There will probably be at least ten new musicals unveiled on Broadway in the course of next season. But all anybody is talking about this Spring’s revival of “Hello, Dolly!,” starring Bette Midler.

Tickets for this highly anticipated show at the Shubert Theater, directed by Jerry Zaks and co-starring David Hyde Pierce, go on sale on Saturday, September 17, at 10 a.m. and you better believe that the “bots” will be ready. The automated software known as “ticket bots” is the bane of Broadway because the program can scoop up tens of thousands of tickets at lightning speed. Their operators then put them up for resale at astronomical prices on ticket platforms like StubHub. Just try getting a ticket to “Hamilton” on that site at close to face value. Read More

Bette Midler On Her Antitdote For Sadness Circa The Seventies: “I love Teresa Brewer. Actually, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ was instrumental in setting me in my path.

Bette Midler On Her Antitdote For Sadness Circa The Seventies: “I love Teresa Brewer. Actually, ‘Wheel of Fortune’ was instrumental in setting me in my path. I attended The Ridiculous Theatrical Company once in the late 1960s and there was this girl in the cast. They had all these fanciful names and hers was Blackeyed Susan. She was kind of a running-gag character. In one part she was a hooker on the docks, and she came out and recited this endless Robert Service poem that made no sense at all. Then in this 1930s number she came out wrapped in toilet paper with dollar bills taped to her. She was the Statue of Liberty and she sang ‘Wheel of Fortune’.” (The National Observer, March 3, 1973) Read More
