Bette Midler Accepting Her Outer Critics Circle Award: “But you know what? Once I jumped into the pool, it was pretty good.

Bette Midler Accepting Her Outer Critics Circle Award: “But you know what? Once I jumped into the pool, it was pretty good. I was surprised how much fun I had, especially during the rehearsals. I thought the rehearsals were absolutely top-drawer. I loved it. I looked forward to getting up in the morning and going to meet the kids and learning the steps and standing in the rehearsal room with Andy Einhorn, who is our musical director, without whom I could not have survived. And Larry Hochman did fantastic orchestrations. It’s been a steep learning curve. I’m not too nervous in front of you. I don’t know why. I guess it’s because you’re already reviewed the show so I don’t give a shit.” (Playbill, MAY 27, 2017) Read More

Viva la diva: How divas are dominating Broadway

Viva la diva: How divas are dominating Broadway

There has been an interesting trend on Broadway of late: the rise of musicals that offer up a diva and not much else.

Amid the recent bloodbath on Broadway (RIP Groundhog Day!), the shows that seem impervious at the box office are those offering audiences a chance to see a diva doing her thing. Broadway audiences lucked out this year with quite a trifecta: Sunset Boulevard with Glenn Close (a limited engagement that already closed), War Paintwith Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole, and Hello Dolly with Bette Midler or Donna Murphy. Those five leading ladies have ten Tony Awards among them, with devoted fanbases who clamor for each of them. Read More

Midler on a successful marriage: “It’s best to pick your fights wisely and just meditate.

Midler on a successful marriage: “It’s best to pick your fights wisely and just meditate. Stay calm. Don’t go from zero to 60 in two seconds. Just stay calm and try to breathe. Breathing is really important.” (People, 11/02/2014)

BetteBack February 13, 1975: Cher comes back – A TV Review

Appleton Post Crescent
February 13, 1975

cher-320

Once upon a time there lived a couple named Sonny and Cher.

Their names went together as well as salt and pepper, bacon and eggs or spareribs and sauerkraut.

Sonny and Cher were not your average couple. They did things most couples never do, such as recording hit songs and naming their daughter Chastity. Later, they had a hit television show.

More recently upon a time, Sonny ” and Cher decided “for better or worse” did not mean “till death us do part,” and they decided to divorce. Read More

There is no question that when Sonny Bono started his “Sonny Comedy Hour” he missed Cher.

The absence of Cher was one of the real reasons for the show failing to make it through the season.

Not only did Sonny’s show lack writing, it lacked comedy.

Next Wednesday night, Cher will try it on her own. This show, a special designed to kick off her new series, came off much better than did Sonny’s solo venture in television.

It was the presence of Cher that made the old “Sonny and Cher Show” a success. The girl can wear clothes like a high fashion model. Read More

GOP passed a health care bill so bad they exempted themselves from it. They may live longer, but when they die, it’s straight to hell!” said Midler.

House Republicans voted Thursday (May 4) to approve a controversial health care bill, that would repeal and replace elements of Obamacare.

Musicians including Katy Perry, John Legend, Bette Midler and more reacted in disgust to the divisive political action.

Perry encouraged her followers to call their senators to vote down the bill when they are called to vote on it next. Meanwhile, Legend jumped to action putting his money here is mouth is by donating to 2018 Democratic congressional challengers and Hayley Williams of Paramore channeled the day’s “May the 4th be with you” meme to draw parallels between the U.S. and the Galactic Empire.
