Bette Midler is such an incredible self-creation—an artist like no other—that finding roles that can harness her enormous energy while allowing room for her wit and her extraordinary skill as a balladeer must have long been a nightmare for her agents. Early in her now more than fifty-year career, Midler did happen upon a part that tapped into her many talents. In 1979, she starred in “The Rose,” a fictional film portrait of a Janis Joplin-like singer, which moved a lot of people, not least because the script reflected aspects of Midler’s own life: her camaraderie with her gay fans and the distance she may have felt from her parents. (Her father wasn’t supportive of her aspirations and saw her perform only once.) Although “The Rose” was a milestone in Midler’s wildly diverse career—in addition to acting onstage and onscreen, she makes records, performs solo shows, and runs a charity that helps transform vacant lots into gardens and public spaces—it was just one of many. As recently as 2013, she was a hit on Broadway in “I’ll Eat You Last,” in which she played the late mega-agent Sue Mengers to superb effect. Now she is back on Broadway, in “Hello, Dolly!” (directed by Jerry Zaks, at the Shubert). Read More

Used to be that when a man wronged a woman in the movies, she got her boyfriend to seek revenge. Now she grabs a .38-special and blasts him herself. Or at least makes his life miserable.

From “Foxfire” to “Freeway” to “Girls Town” to “The First Wives Club,” women are standing up and saying they’re not going to take it anymore. When it comes to the big screen, revenge is sweet indeed. Read More

Who: Jennica McCleary as Bette Midler in Divine Deception

When: Friday, July 1, 2016 at 9:30 PM – 10:30 PM in ETD

Where: Metropolitan Room, 34 W 22nd St, New York, New York 10010

Most recently seen as Winifred Sanderson in The Hocus Pocus Villain Spelltacular at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, Jennica is now looking forward to her NYC premiere as Bette. A project several years in the making, Divine Deception: A Tribute to Bette Midler first came to life six years ago in Las Vegas thanks to two influential individuals. First encouraged by a friend in the business to impersonate Bette due to her striking resemblance to the diva, it took one special encounter to propel Jennica full steam ahead. After meeting Midler (who mistakenly thought a promotional photo for Divine Deception was a picture of her from the 1970s) in person, Miss McCleary knew she would have to bring her reenactment to the stage. I consider myself a New Yorker. I’ve had a lot of good times in New York, and I’ve had a lot of success…

“I consider myself a New Yorker. I’ve had a lot of good times in New York, and I’ve had a lot of success. I’ve put a lot of effort into the city, and I really love it, but I was born and brought up in Hawaii. I go there at least a couple of times a year, and I still feel like a Hawaiian. You know, you’re always happiest in your childhood home. My heart is there. That’s where I’m comfortable.”
